Today we chat with J.M. Kostallas, founder of Kostal Enterprise. Many may know the company as Kostal Paddle, which offers Stand Up Paddle boarding lessons, rentals, SUP Yoga, and eco tours. With locations in Port Washington and Island Park, the company is also a provider of custom-made paddle boards and paddles.

Patch: How did you get your first start in business?

J.M. Kostallas: I first started in business at school in St Johns University where I studied sports management. But then later Graduated from Eckerd College, with dual major in Environmental studies and Business Management.

Patch: Tell us something about yourself that most of your neighbors don't know.

Kostallas: Most of my neighbors wouldn't know that I am a competitive Stand Up Paddle Boarder ranking in the top 10 in the North East.

Patch: How long have you lived here?

Kostallas: I have lived in Port Washington since 94 but traveling back in forth from NY to FL for many years.

Patch: How did your parents influence you as a business owner?

Kostallas: Without my parents I don't think I would be doing what I am doing today and running a successful business like this one. I would have to say they have influenced me to be who I am and strive to succeed.

Patch: What's your favorite thing about living here?

Kostallas: The fact that we are surrounded by water.

Patch: What's a business mistake you've made that later you were glad you did?

Kostallas: Mistakes are made all the time but you have to learn from them they are what make businesses stronger.

Patch: What's the best business advice you've ever received?

Kostallas: Best advice I have been told is to follow your dreams and do what you love then work won’t be work it will be easy.

Patch: What advice would you give to a small business owner just starting out?

Kostallas: Follow your passion and don't give up!

Patch: What do you look for when you hire?

Kostallas: When I hire I am looking for someone who is certified in Lifeguarding or other aquatic skills along with a general knowledge of boating or other aquatic activities.
