Big Gains For Young Athletes at Bob Baratta Classic

Schreiber boys and girls track and field teams have good showing at annual event.

The Schreiber boys and girls track and field teams recently competed in the 5th Annual Bob Baratta Classic held at Great Neck South High School late last month. It was a sunny and brisk day for this early season meet, but that did not stop the spectators from showing up in masses and the athletes arriving ready to run, throw and jump during the day-long competition.

One of the main goals of the Bob Baratta Classic is to provide quality early season competition with a particular emphasis on freshman and sophomore events. Medals are given to the top five finishers in each individual event and top three teas in the relays. A special award was given to all steeple chase winners.

The first event of the day was the 3,000-meter Steeple Chase and it was also the first win of the day for a Schreiber runner. Sidharth Kakkar ran with the pack in the beginning of this grueling race but then took over at the halfway point and won without much competition in a time of 10 minutes, 57.2 seconds. Another first-place finish for a Schreiber runner was achieved by Luke Lanoue who finished the 110-meter High Hurdles in 15 seconds flat.
