Despite Loss, Port Swimming Continues to Improve

Vikings set to close out regular season with meets this Thursday and Friday.

Port Washington's boys swim team was handily defeated by Plainview High School on Tuesday night, 61-33. Despite the loss, the Vikings continue to improve, setting multiple school records and personal bests.

The 200 Medley Relay team of Ivan Bandovic, Steven Smith, Jason Moss, and Tommy Jester, now ranked ninth in Nassau County, continues to dominate with another first-place finish and a school record of 1:53.03 (from 1:53.07). These same athletes also bested their 200 Freestyle Relay time with a second first-place finish and school record, posting a two-second drop to finish in 1:37.36. That time places the freestyle relay team, originally ranked 16th, seventh in Nassau County.

"We are looking to continue this progress into the championship weekends ahead," coach Joe Lennon said.

Bandovic also shattered his 100 Butterfly record for the second meet in a row, posting a 56.79, which was good for a second-place finish. Other personal bests were turned in by the 200 Freestyle Relay team of Luke Record, David Gueli, Seo Yoon Park, and Mattias Franco posting a 1:56.44 (from 1:59.49); Park bested his 50 Freestyle to a 29.98; senior Will O'Neill turned in his fastest 100 Backstroke for the seventh meet in a row, dropping his time to 1:11.62, an astounding 17-second drop over the course of the season; and Gueli swam a personal best in the 100 Butterfly, dropping over four seconds to a 1:15.09.

"We are making great progress with every swim," Lennon said. "We are looking forward to swimming Great Neck South this Thursday and our dual meet finale with conference rivals, Sewanhaka and Manhasset."

Both meets will be held at Great Neck South High School, with the Thursday meet versus North starting at 4:30 p.m. and the three-team meet kicking off at 7 p.m. on Friday night.

"The team is swimming strong and putting extra time in to fine tune strokes, starts, turns and finishes," Lennon said. "We will be put to the test Friday and with the momentum we are carrying forward, we are ready for the challenge."
