Coast Guard Presentation

Safe paddling, of utmost importance to all canoeists, kayakers and stand-up paddlers, will
be addressed by a representative of the United States Coast Guard at the next meeting
of the North Shore Kayak Club.  Fred Furnell, a master captain, will discuss the current
Coast Guard programs in place to teach people how to be safer on the water.

Captain Furnell's presentation is scheduled for Thursday, July 14 at the Port Washington
Community Chest Building, 382 Main Street, at 8:00 pm.  Parking is available across the
street at the Town Dock.  There is no charge for the program and it is open to the public.

Among the topics to be discussed by Captain Furnell will be the paddle sport course
offered by the USCG Auxiliary, similar to that of the boating safety course that power
boaters are familiar with.  He will discuss the vessel safety exam that outlines the
minimum federal requirements on all paddle craft; as well as the fairly new USCG
paddle craft identification program.  Captain Furnell will also address the current debate
over how safe inflatable personal flotation devices actually are.

The North Shore Kayak Club is a not-for-profit organization of recreational paddlers
who share a love of the water, along with the camaraderie of paddling with others.   The
Club has a full schedule of paddles from June through November, in our local waters
and around the New York Metropolitan Area.  Recent outings have included a full moon
paddle on Manhasset Bay, a trip from Oyster Bay to Bayville to Mill Neck and weekly
Wednesday evening paddles.  Upcoming outings include a very scenic Hudson River
paddle in Orange County and a trip launching from Cold Spring Harbor.  For further
