Sands Point Preserve's Family Pirate Night with "World of Reptiles & Amphibians"

Kids love pirates, too, so Friends of the Sands Point Preserve will extend the 2012 Preservers’ Celebration theme of “Pirates of the Caribbean” to a special Family Pirate Night on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at Hempstead House.  This “Screen-Free Week” event begins at 5:00 pm with a Scavenger Hunt in Hempstead House - children can hunt for treasure among the fantastic pirate decorations - and explore a gnarly pirate ship 'anchored' in Hempstead House; at 5:30 p.m., enjoy a Picnic Pizza Dinner – families are invited to bring a blanket and sit out on the Great Lawn or in the Rose Gardens overlooking the Long Island Sound, or inside Hempstead House, in case of rain; and, at 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Erik’s Reptile Edventures will present “The World of Reptiles and Amphibians.”

The science program celebrates the diversity of reptiles, amphibians and arthropods from North America, South America, Africa, Asia, Australia and Madagascar.  This interactive presentation allows children of all ages to see, touch, and learn about the lives of these amazing animals.  Participants will meet twelve species including, lizards, snakes, turtles, tree frogs, toads, salamanders, and an American alligator named Wally – and develop an appreciation for these extraordinary creatures and their environments.

Admission for the entire event, including dinner, is $20 per car, $10 with your Annual Pass.  Reservations can be made in person at the Preserve’s Gatehouse, daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., or by phone (516.571.7901) and email (info@friendsspp.org).
