Field Hockey Postponed Twice - Remain Top of Conference

A look at sports in the previous week.

The Port Washington girls field hockey team is picking up its game. And when sophomore Lauren Desimone scores, the team wins. The Vikings are 3-1 overall and in the conference this season. The sophomore has a total of four goals and has been the stand-out performer on the offensive attack.

By Tuesday, the team was supposed to have completed a total of six games, but two of them were rained out, much to the athletes' disappointment.

"I would have loved to play in the rain," said sophomore Olivia Anderson. "It's really upsetting how these games keep getting cancelled."

Girls Tennis To Play At Garden City 0n Tuesday

The girls tennis team has two posters displayed outside the Schreiber High School tennis courts commemorating their 2008 and 2009 seasons, but this year the team has gotten off to somewhat of a slow start.

Their 1-2 record is a sign of lacking key players like Jennifer Fridman and Jessica Podlofsky, two starters who were both considering smacking forehands and backhands at the collegiate level. While they are not playing tennis for a Divison III program, both girls were integral parts of Stan Mackover's success as the girls varsity head coach.

However, the team remains undeterred as first doubles partners and cousins Jackie Froccaro and Alexa Froccaro are returning players with two titles under their belt from the last two seasons. The cousins have been excellent, as usual.

While the girls tennis team is not retaining its dominating performances of recent past seasons, success is still on the horizon.

Schreiber Basketball On The Up And Up

Fall sports are in full swing. Teams like the girls volleyball team are shaping up for the post-season. Others, though, are just getting started.

Two notable names this season will be junior Josh Feshbach and senior Casey Ozcayir, who both qualified to be part of Nassau County's top forty players.

Feshbach, a transfer from Friends Academy, will be one of the starters this season. Originally from Turkey, Ozcayir plans to commit himself to becoming a stronger part of the team in his third season on varsity.

"I'm probably going to be one of the go-to-guys this season, like [seniors] Dan [Bernstein] and Adam [Epstein] were last year," said Ozcayir. "It will nice to finally take the reigns in my senior year."
