Friday Is Alumni Night for Vikings Wrestling

Alumni return for a 'comeback.'

Friday marks is alumni night for Port Washington wrestling at .

Head Coach Anthony Schettino says the night is an important one for the team and its supporters.

"At 6:30 p.m. the Port Washington Vikings will take to the mat to battle league rival Hicksville," he said. "Prior to this dual meet our PYA youth wrestlers, the future of our program will open for the high school and then join our friends, fans and family in stands for what we expect to be a historic event for Port Wrestling."

Schettino, who has coached wrestling in Port Washington for the past 20 years, says he was fortunate to begin his coaching career as the assistant coach for National Hall of Fame Coach Robert "Buzz" Busby, who coached in Port for 37 years.

Schettino says Port continues to enjoy a winning program that dates back to the early 1960s. Describing the the team as "the best kept secret in the town of Port Washington," he aims to pack the gym to standing-room-only for Friday's big event.  

"When we started our Port alumni wrestling night three years ago we started with over 20 alumni in attendance," he said. "Last year's event grew to over 50."

Schettino aims to keep the trend thriving. In addition to Busby, who will attend, "I also invited two very important friends and guests, Former Head Olympic Coach Greg Strobel and motivational speaker and former Penn State wrestler Rohan Murphy," Schettino said.  

Said Schettino: "We work extremely hard every day including holidays through blood and sweat in order to produce a championship caliber program and hope that the people in our community will come out to support their Viking Wrestlers."
