January a Busy Month for Boys Wrestling

Port Washington hosted alumni night and a tournament in January.

January was a busy month for the Vikings boys wrestling team at . The team hosted its third annual alumni night, which brought in 40 alumni on Jan. 14. And on Jan. 17, the team went on to host the Bob Busby Classic Tournament, an all-day event that featured eight teams, in which Port placed second. 

Patch caught up with Anthony Schettino, Port Washington's head wrestling coach, who talked about the tournament and alumni night. 

"The eight-team Busby Classic was the largest wrestling event ever hosted at Schreiber High School and was a huge success," he said, adding that the champions were "a very strong Chaminade team." And while second place was Port, third was Mineola, fourth Hewlett, fifth North Shore, sixth Great Neck North, seventh Wheatley and eighth Bellmore JFK.

Asked about some of the highlights, Schettino said, "Mike Froccaro at 103 pounds has bumped up to 112 to wrestle tougher opponents and has come out on top as well as his win against a very tough opponent from Chaminade."

Other highlights? "Twins Boris and Lenny Joutovsky have been wrestling great and have been providing a boost to their team and teammates as captains and through their performance on the mat."

As for alumni night, the event kicked off with wrestlers from Port Youth Activities performing a demonstration for the crowd, featuring national champion wrestlers Timmy Castillo and George Moschos," Shettino said.

Then the Vikings took to the mat for a dual meet against a tough Valley Stream Central. As Schettino tells it, it was standing room only as Noah Tanenbaum at 135 pounds "kicked the evening off with a big win for the Vikings against a previous qualifying place winner." The Vikings next saw "impressive wins in all weight classes but two with a score of 69-11," Schettino said. 

Alumni made donations towards the renovation of the old wrestling room, and friends, family and fans went on to celebrate at .
