Lacrosse Loses League Opener to Farmingdale

Tied at five in the fourth quarter, Dalers go on 4-0 run to defeat Vikings.

With the game tied at five early in the final period, this was anyone's game. But the Schreiber Vikings varsity lacrosse team seemed to run out of steam as the Farmingdale Dalers picked up speed, scoring the games final four goals to take home this Conference I matchup, 9-5, at Allen Park.

Many Vikings players said they knew they were facing a formidable opponent heading into Saturday's game and the team's strong efforts were evident on the field. "At first we were jittery," said senior defenseman Markee Illdefonso, "but then we found we could play with them and we did for a while."

Kyle Lewis, a junior defenseman, added, "Our effort was commendable. We brought our skill up to their level but we just couldn't finish it off."

Farmingdale's Korey Hendrickson led all scorers with four goals while Brian Prendergast added two goals and two assists for the Dalers. Sal Tuttle also assisted on three goals and Farmingdale goalie Hayden Kirk made 11 saves to pick up the win.

Leading the way for the Vikings (0-1 Conference I, 2-1 overall) was Jake Froccaro with two goals and two assists while Brandon Henne (two goals), Breig Bevilacque (one goal) and Owen Caruso (one assist) closed out the team's scoring.

"This was an exciting nail biter all the way through," said Linda Henne, one of the many Vikings fans who traveled to Allen Park in South Farmingdale.

Despite the loss, coach Joe Mascaretti said his team continues to gain confidence and improve with every game. "I'm proud because we never backed down," he said. "We see what we have to do to contend with the top county teams."

The Vikings get back on the field on Tuesday, April 13, when they take on Herricks at the Herricks Community Center at 4:45 p.m.
