Lady Vikings Fall to Comets, 28-22

Girls varsity basketball held scorless in third period during loss to Hicksville.

Strong defense from the Hicksville Lady Comets and a dominating performance by forward Michelle Filangieri were too much for the Lady Vikings to overcome on Friday evening. A scoreless third period put the game out of reach for Port Washington who fell to first-place Hicksville, 28-22, on PYA Night at Schreiber.

Filangieri accounted for more than half of the Lady Comets' points, finishing with 15 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks to lead Hicksville (9-1) in in this Conference AA-III matchup. The loss dropped Schreiber to 6-4 in conference play.

"We talked at halftime about shrinking the middle of the key to cut off her lanes, and keeping her off the boards," Vikings coach Dennis Trottier said of Filangieri. "She's a good player and she showed it tonight."

The Lady Comets came out of halftime to score 10 unanswered points in the third, taking an eight-point lead into the game's final quarter. Guard Marissa Mertens had four steals to help hold the Lady Vikings scoreless in the third period.

"We were up at halftime, [Ariana] Spagna hit a nice three at the end of the second to give us some momentum and we just came out flat-footed in the third," Trottier said. "When they went on that run in the third and kept us scoreless, it really hurt us."

Port Washington threatened in the fourth quarter, getting within five points, but an illegal block by Emily Rosenthal, fouling her out of the game with 1:35 left to play in regulation essentially ended the Lady Vikings' chances at victory. Rosenthal ended with seven points. Spagna led the Lady Vikings with eight.

The Lady Vikings are back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 3, when they take on Hempstead High School (2-7 in Conference AA-III) at Schreiber.
