New 'Skate Spot' in Port Washington

The site is located at Manorhaven Beach Park.

There's a new skate spot in Port Washington, at .

The spot, which is about 10,000-square-feet, was designed by Jason Baldessari, of California-based Spohn Ranch Skateparks, with who met with the designer at a public meeting in December 2010.

"There were many teen skaters there and Jason not only met with them that night for about an hour and a half, he exchanged email addresses with them," said North Hempstead Councilman Fred Pollack. "The teens sent him ideas about the type of facility they wanted. And he used many of their ideas in the design. That's why I am confident this skate facility will be popular for years to come."

The contract for the skate spot was just under $349,000, Pollack said, who added that funds came from a bond issue for improvements to the park.

The town is also working on a concept for a skatepark in  that would be between 25,000 and 30,000 square feet.

The Manorhaven spot had its official grand opening Sunday. Check back with Patch for more, including feedback from teens, on the skate spot.

Very nice for these kids but what are you doing about Alvin Petrus Park. Don't they deserve a park too??
CarolannCrowley October 21, 2011 at 04:00 pm
Thank you for doing that. The skateboarders were causing traffic problems and littering Manhasset Isle. In additon they almost knocked over an 86 year old women and kept skate boarding without asking her if she was OK!. They were inconsiderate and rude, thank you for saving Manhassett Isle

Nice another "Bond" Pollack was never for this project. It MUST be an election year. Pollack maybe you can get the bond for Plandome Road, that would be nice.

Thank you to the Town for this park. The young people desperately need a place to skateboard. Everywhere you go in town there are signs "no skateboarding." There are also people like Carolann complaining vociferously about young folks doing no one harm. I also live on Manhasset Isle, and find no problem. In fact, some of the most avid skateboarders live on my block. They are always courteous to me. The only traffic problem I see is that occasionally I have to slow down to avoid hitting overzealous skateboarders. I do not see that as a problem. We should be driving very slowly on Manhasset Isle anyway. When I was a kid in Queens, drivers had to slow down or stop because we were roller skating, playing stickball or hopscotch (we called it potsie) or just horsing around. They didn't complain, but "back in the day" there was a sense of community.

I grew up in Queens and always stopped when an elderly person passed by. IT WAS NOT YOUR MOTHER THAT THEY ALMOST KNOCKED DOWN IT WAS MINE! They did not have your blocke off so that you could not drive down it. I moved from Queens to keep my mother safe not to be knocked over

Caolann, I am truly sorry about your mother. I hope that she was not hurt. I can only share my own experiences and did so to show that not everyone has had the same experiences with the skateboarders as did you and your mother.
I am BTW, almost the same age as your mother.

I've been involved with getting the skatepark project for the past three years and to be fair; must say that the process was slow but steady and dealing with Mr. Pollack and Mr. Kaiman was cordial, polite and positive... And to expect any project of this magnitude to progress faster would be naïve at best!

My young elementary age kids enjoy the skateboard park, but there should be a sign up "no smoking" (and some occational police enforcement). Smoking teenages are a bad influence.

Rob - That is not what you told me two years ago. You were sick and tired of the lies, empty promises and the photo ops Kaiman and Pollack had using your kids. I am glad the kids got the park they fought so hard to get. But why did they have to fight that hard in the first place. Rob remember it was Lee Tu at the pizza party at your house congratulating the kids for their efforts in his campaign and passing out Lee's flyers. You don't truly have a voice in local government with Pollack as our representative - he is still using you for photo ops because it is a campaign year. How did you explain the flip flopping to your kids.

I took my children there today and it was GREAT. 30-40 young people enjoying the day. Many youngsters on scooters and older guys on boards. Everyone was polite and waited their turn despite lots of activity. Was great to see kids finally having a place to exercise without being told they CAN'T do this or that. (Every park you go to these days there's a huge list of "don't do's", yet we complain Americans are fat...) That location was an unused area, and now it's vibrant and everyone can enjoy the beautiful view of the water too. Go check it out...

Vivacious+Town Hall= Kaiman's Town Hall PR people................
Vivacious October 25, 2011 at 05:52 pm
I have no affiliation to Town Hall or any politician...I'm a parent who wants the best for my kids and the community. We need to look at the big picture here and it's a nice place for kids to practice a hobby and enjoy the outdoors. I didn't mention any politician/party, I just wrote a positive review.

Wrong again, Dave/Brian/Jane. Your tri-polar personality is consistently wrong.

I think your comment is a little bit over the top, first off how can skateboarders litter anymore then children playing baseball, skating, playing Basketball. I in fact most of the littering on the Isle is on Manhassett Ave not by children but by those who work here and those non-homeowners in the basement appartments that are full again.
Nicholas Capozzi October 28, 2011 at 01:20 am
Did you ever consider that these "rude" kids are your neighbors children, perhaps you should have gone to their parents, rather than putting up with their knocking down people or giving lip service to you. They are your neighbors.
Nicholas Capozzi October 28, 2011 at 01:34 am
Ms Crowley just one more thing if you think the councilman and the supervisor "saved the Isle" then you are more over the top with your comments then I thought. Neither of them ever "Saved" the Isle. In case you would really like to know who did more than anyone it was my adminstration for over 12 years. Streets were cleaner, codes were followed, Stop Signs were placed in bad corners, bright lights were placed on Manhassett Ave. to light up all the corners were acidents happened once a week. The Truck route was changed to prevent the trucks from the most populated areas of the Isle. But most of all the illegal apartments were shut down, that saved the Isle not a $349,000 rink.

I'll be intrested to see the first law suit when a child (heaven forbid) that gets hurt and the homeowners have to foot the millions to satisfy the suit. How much more insurence costs . Did we really need to have a "state of the art rink". $ 349,000.00 and have a out of stste person design it. I think there are local people or someone on the TONH's payroll who could have done just as well. Bonds, Bonds, Spend & Tax, Spend & Tax

Nassau Taxpayer October 29, 2011 at 11:48 am
That's three strikes, stan. You're out, like dave/brian/jane. What pathetic lives you must lead to consistently drag up the "big lie" campaign.

We have looked forward every year to joining the pool the new pool was a waist of money I want theRead More old pool back my kids hate it it constantly closes because little kids vomit and have accidents it's a giant kid pool there is no room to swim and it's not deep enough this was a great community place to gather and socialize now older kids don't want to go and have one less place to go for the summer good job
Nassau Taxpayer June 19, 2013 at 10:23 pm
The numbers don't lie. The pool has been a disaster since the last full year in its originalRead More format.
