Photo of The Day: Cardio vs. Ortho

It's a senior softball all-star game.

Softball is a summer pastime for many, including Port Washington resident Bob Gebel, shown right. A full 46 years after knee surgery,  Gebel (right), 77, stretched to catch a ball at first base during the first annual “Cardio vs. Ortho” all-star game at Baldwin Park on Wednesday. Sponsored by the Bristal Assisted living community, the game featured players over the age of 70 who underwent heart related surgeries against those whose lives were improved following orthopedic operations such as knee or hip replacements.

Al Lederer, 82, (left) of Massapequa who underwent heart bypass surgery, beat the throw to first. The “Orthos” defeated the “Cardios” 9-7. The All Stars who compete in the Long Island Senior Softball Association (LISSA) play two doubleheaders a week.
