Port Rowing Honored by Town

Team recognized for performance at recent national championships.

Ten athletes from Port Rowing were honored this week for their performance at the U.S. Rowing Club National Championships in Camden, N.J., in July.

The rowers were recognized Oct. 24 at a town board meeting in Manhasset.

The team sent six teams to the national finals in Jersey with twin sisters Melissa and Ashley Iannucci winning Port Rowing's first national championship

The Men's Lightweight Eight team also had an impressive finish led by team members Alex and Zach Herron, Carl Finkbeiner, Ben Schor, Nick Barry, Leo Santala, Ryan Peters, Matthew Brandes and Will Barnes.

At last regatta of the season, the team competed in Canada at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in St. Catherines on Lake Ontario. It was the first international competition or many of the rowers. At the seven-day event, the team sent seven teams to the semifinals and four teams to the finals with a top finish of fifth in the men's U19 eight category.

"This year's senior class is the first to go four years through the program," said coach Steve Panzik earlier this year.

In 2012, Port Rowing sent advanced just one team to the second round.
