Port Defeats Farmingdale in Boys Lacrosse

Jake Froccaro scores six goals to power Port Washington, 13-8.

After five games away from their familiar turf, the Port Washington Vikings boys lacrosse team settled back in their familiar stomping grounds at and achieved a familiar result: a win.

Port Washington defeated last year's New York State Class A Champions, the Farmingdale Dalers, in a conference match on Tuesday afternoon, 13-8.

On the season, the Vikings are 4-4, but first year head coach Tom Rooney explained that the team stacked their non-conference schedule with difficult opponents like Long Beach, South Side, and Happauge – all which turned out losses – in order to improve the level of the team.

Hero: Senior Jake Froccaro scored six goals on 17 shots, including two of the last four to clinch the Vikings' victory in the fourth quarter. However, Derek Caruso was forced to step up and impressed his teammates and coaches after starting midfielder Richard Greenberg tore his ACL, ending his season, particularly in Tuesday's game.

Caruso is a hockey player in the winter, but Rooney complimented him on his athleticism and adaptability to the game of lacrosse.

"He understands how to play off of other players," Rooney said. "Crawley and Rizzo are really good at finding the open men."

Caruso had three goals on six shots; two of them were assisted by junior John Crawley.

Turning Point: Up 3-1 after the first twelve minutes, the Vikings had found themselves in a comfortable position. The Port squad would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game.

"The last couple of games, we haven't really come out 'on fire,' but today I think we actually were excited for a game it seemed like," Crawley said. "I hope we bring that to the next couple of games."

Bottom Line: The Vikings won the face-off battle 18-7, and ultimately it was where the game was decided.

Quotable: "When you win face-offs, you don't have to be as cautious with the ball and I didn't want them to get tight," said Rooney, referring to what he told the team late in the game.
