Port Washington Field Hockey Advances to Nassau Championship

Vikings defeat East Meadow 2-1 on Wednesday in playoff action.

The Port Washington girls field hockey team advanced to the Nassau County championship with a 2-1 win over East Meadow on Wednesday.

Avenging a loss to East Meadow (3-9-1) earlier this season, Port Washington (5-7) scored the first two goals of the game then held on for the win at Schreiber.

"My girls just stepped up, they probably played their best game today," said Port Head Coach Joe Lederer.

After a slow start to the season with losses in the first four games, Port Washington responded well in conference play and earned the Nassau Class A conference No. 2 playoff seed.

"Our learning curve was straight up," said Lederer.

Top performers for Port Washington was Jina Lay with a first half goal, and Chelsie Nachamie who contributed with an unassisted second half goal and an assist.

In goal for Port Washington was Erin McDonough with 3 saves and Vera Puglisi with 2 saves.

Scoring for the Jets was Lexus Turrisi with an assist by Amanda Romeo.

Port Washington will travel to Adlephi University Sunday for a 4 p.m. championship match against Massapequa (9-3).
