Port Football Shows Resilience But Loses To Plainview

Port Washington looked tough for one half, but could not keep it up for the third and fourth quarters.

The Port Washington Vikings football team lost to the Plainview Hawks on Saturday afternoon to a 27-14 score. The Vikings (0-8) and Hawks (3-5) both did not make the Nassau Conference I playoffs.

It was the last game of the season for head coach Joe DelGais this season, who put his heart and soul into the Port Washington football program. However, the Vikings could not reward "DG," as he is called by most of the players, with a victory.

Hero: While Port Washington halfback Shawn McKoy (two touchdowns, including a 72 yard rush played an almost expected stellar performance, fullback Steven Vissichelli was one step ahead. The senior from Plainview scored two touchdowns to put down the Vikings late in the game.

Turning Point: On an onside kick after a scored touchdown in the third quarter, the Hawks recovered the football at midfield and strove home to score another. At that time, the game was almost out of reach for Port Washington.

Bottom Line: Plainview pounded Port with its running game throughout the contest. While the season is over for both teams, the Vikings look ahead to see sophomore quarterback Vincent Miscioscia, and linebackers Aaron Underwood and Christian Castillo play with the varsity squad next year. All three were JV standouts and will potentially revitalize the Port Washington program.

Quotable: "I'm playing with all my heart for these seniors," said McKoy, a junior, at halftime. "They deserve this one."
