Port Area Residents Compete in Marine Corps Marathon

Local runners fare well at annual event in D.C.

The Port Washington area was well represented at the 2013 Marine Corps Marathon in the nation's capitol on Sunday.

Thousands of runners descended on the roads of Arlington and Washington on the brisk autumn day, including Port Washington residents Norah Johnson and Andrew Small.

Turning in respectable runs, Small, 47, finished at 4:00:11. Johnson, 60, completed the race with a time of 5:04:13. 

Alan Schwartz, 52, of Sands Point averaged 8.31 minutes per mile to finish at 3:44:43.

From Manhasset, female runners Hilary Gallo, 24, (4:08:48) and Danielle Nardi, 32, (4:52:12) fared well.

Girma Bedada of Ethiopia finished first with a time of 2:21:32 to win the 38th annual event. 

Colorado resident and U.S. Army Capt. Kelly Calway was the first woman to cross the finish line (2:42:16).
