Port Rowing Teams Headed to National Championships

Outstanding performances at state and Long Island championships propels team to new heights.

After a dominant showing during championship Regatta season, Port Rowing teams will compete for the first time at the upcoming national championships in Camden, N.J. 

Competing in the Long Island Championships May 4 in Centre Island then dominating at the state championships in Saratoga May 11-12, Port Rowing turned in some of its best performances ever.

In Center Island, the team stepped up its level of performance, netting 9 medals.
The varsity women brought home two silvers in the lightweight and JV 4 divisions. The novice team won a silver and a bronze in the men’s division, while the girls did some of their best rowing. The varsity boys brought home 5 medals with 3 silvers (light and JV4, JV 8), and two bronze (JV4 and JV 8).

The Long Island wins set set up stellar runs in Saratoga where 11 of 14 boats advanced to the second round of the state championships — 6 boats medaled and 3 qualified for nationals.

The men’s freshman 8 took the overall state championship with a great final and qualified for nationals. The JV 8 took first place in the Club division out of 18 boats. The girls lightweight 4 raced a great final to a second place scholastic finish and a berth at nationals. The men’s varsity 8 rowed the race of the day, taking second place scholastic by .62 seconds and their spot at nationals. The men’s pairs took second and third in the club division on the final racing of the day.

This weekend, the team continues its championship run with races in Philadelphia and Lowell, Mass.
