Port Washington Girls Volleyball Falls to East Meadow

Despite losing the first two games, East Meadow won the next three to take the match.

The Port Washington girls volleyball team took the first two games at Thursday's home game against East Meadow. But that wasn't enough for Port Washington to defeat host East Meadow. Ultimately, the East Meadow Jets took the victory – 22-25, 21-25, 25-11, 25-22, 25-22.

"They missed a lot of serves the first two games and hit the ball out of bounds," East Meadow Coach Pat Burnside said. "But then we settled in and kept the ball on the court, and we forced them to make mistakes."

Hero: The Viking's Hayley Kerr. She was the general on the court and played almost the entire match.

The young East Meadow team, which has just four seniors, went back and forth in game one, leading at one point, 18-17. Port Washington was able to turn the tides and slip by with a win 25-22. The second game was a lot of the same, except the Vikings led most of the way. While the Jets lingered, they were unable to get the point to put them over the top, and Port Washington had a commanding two-game lead.

The Jets controlled game three from the onset, as they scored 15 of the first 19 points, and they were able to cruise to a rather easy 25-11 win.

"We always stress to never give up," Senior Captain Jennifer Gundrum said. "We needed people to step up, and they did."

But Port Washington would not go quietly.

The Vikings chipped away, and before you could blink an eye, they had a 21-19 lead, and a seemingly defeated East Meadow team was able to stand strong once again, pulling out a 25-22 win.

Quotable: Port Washington Coach Patty Borzon expects her team to "win more games this season," although she admitted it was tough losing in such a close match in the season opener.

"The girls played hard," she said. "We should've had them a couple of times, but we just couldn't finish."

Bottom Line: East Meadow blasted out of the gate in game five, as the Jets scored seven of the first eight points of the contest. Port Washington was able to stick around, but ultimately lost 25-22.
