Port Washington Lacrosse Gets Playoff Win

Vikings earn 11-2 win over Plainview JFK Wednesday in Nassau Class A quarterfinal.

On to the semis.

That’s the mission the Port Washington boys lacrosse team set for itself long before Wednesday’s playoff showdown with Plainview JFK.

These Vikings remember last season’s playoff run. These Vikings wanted more.

And they delivered. No. 3 Port Washington controlled the ball and scored an early knockout of No. 6 Plainview, 11-2, in a Nassau Class A quarterfinal at Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium.

“Last year it was a big deal to get to the semis,” Port Washington Coach Tom Rooney said. “They were excited to win this game. But they have bigger aspirations.”

Johns Hopkins-bound attack John Crawley poured in four goals and added an assist for the Vikings. After Crawley’s star turn, he didn’t go celebrate. He sat in the bleachers and studied his next opponent with teammates.

“It’s been a transformation since I’ve been here,” Crawley said. “We’ve really become family.”

Port Washington advances to the semifinals and will face the Syosset-MacArthur winner next Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Hofstra.

Crawley scored three of the game’s first four goals to give the Vikings (12-5) a 4-0 lead with 2:06 left in the first quarter.

“There’s a reason he’s going to Johns Hopkins,” Rooney said. “It’s not just scoring goals. He picks up a ton of ground balls. He passes the ball well. He’s an excellent all-around player.”

Sophomore Joey Froccaro got the offense in gear, winning 12 of 16 faceoffs. Plainview (9-7), which had success stopping Port during the regular season thanks to its zone defense, could not hold back the Vikings in the rematch.

Rooney had a simple message for his team afterward: “Enjoy this, but tomorrow we go back to work. We can’t be satisfied with winning one playoff game.”
