Port Washington Sports Notebook: April 8-14

Patch will get you caught up on all your local sports action.

There are so many sports out in the Port Washington area, it can be a full-time job just sifting through all of the action. Luckily, you have Patch and we will get you caught up in one convenient place each week.

Here’s what the local Port Washington-area teams have been up to this week:

Port Washington:

Baseball: The boys won their lone game of the week by the score of 6-3 over Manhasset. The game went into extra innings, with the go-ahead run coming in on a sacrifice fly by Adam Rubenstein. Andy Varvaro was the winning pitcher.

Softball: The team won both games this past week. The first one was on April 8 over Elmont by the score of 15-3. The offense was led by Elisabeth Kostallas who went 2-3 with three RBI. Alex Caprariello was the winning pitcher in the game.

On April 10 the Vikings defeated Westbury 12-0. Once again, Caprariello was the winning pitcher. This time she tossed a one-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts to lead Port Washington. They are now 5-1 on the season.

Boys Lacrosse: The Vikings also won both of their games this past week. On April 10 they defeated Uniondale 9-2. Luke Rizzo and Daniel Grossman each scored two goals.

They won again on April 12 over Oceanside by the score of 12-10. Luke Rizzo led the scoring with five goals, while Joey Froccaro added four of his own.

Girls Lacrosse: On April 9 the Vikings were defeated by Long Beach 9-8. The game was tied with 1:15 remaining when Melissa Rubin broke the tie with a goal. She had three goals in the game.

On April 11 they also lost to Wantagh 16-6. The star of the game was Colleen Lovett who scored five goals and recorded five assists. Catie Ingrilli also had four goals in the game.

Manhasset:

Baseball: The Indians had a tough week as they lost all four games to drop to 0-7 on the season. On April 8 they were upended 9-1 by Clarke. Kevin Lada went 3-3 with a home run.

On April 9 the Indians lost to Seaford 14-7. They had an opportunity to comeback but the game was called due to darkness in the seventh inning. Zach Cachia went 3-4 with a home run and three RBI. Enea hit a home run for the Indians.

On April 11 the Indians were defeated 12-7 by Valley Stream North. Despite the loss Enea hit another home run. Anthony Martelli hit the go-ahead three-run home run in the fourth inning.

On April 13 the Indians lost 6-3 to Port Washington. Adam Rubenstein hit the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth to break the 3-3 tie.

Softball: The team lost its lone game to Cold Spring Harbor on April 11 by the score of 13-8. Jacklyn Albers went 3-4 with three RBI to lead CSH. Sabrina Odierno was 3-4 as well with three runs scored.

Boys Lacrosse: The Indians won both their games this week. The first one was on April 9 over Bethpage by the score of 16-3. Mike Fahey scored three goals, while Tommy Lavelle and James Thomas both added two.

On April 11 they routed North Shore by the score of 14-4. Tommy Lavelle led the scoring with four goals.

The Indians also lost to Chaminade 10-3 in the annual Lead the Way Fund memorial game at Manhasset High School Saturday.

Girls Lacrosse: On April 9 the Indians defeated Wantagh 19-7. Julia Glynn led the offense with five goals. Sarah Barcia amassed four goals in the win.

They were defeated on April 11 in double overtime by Garden City 10-9. Haley O’Hanlon was the star of the game as she scored four goals including the game-winner with only 14 seconds remaining.

St. Mary’s:

Baseball: The Gaels had a tough week as they dropped both games to St. Dominic. On April 9 it was a 15-0 shutout. Chris Johnson, Mark Flynn and Dan Hopkins all homered in the game.

On April 11 it was a 16-3 loss. Troy Scocca was 4-5 in the game with three RBI. John Mione was the winning pitcher.

Softball: The Gaels lost all three games this week. On April 9 it was a 10-0 loss to St. Dominic. Briana Maniscalco tossed a no-hitter, although it was an abbreviated five-inning game. She recorded eight strikeouts. Amanda Finn hit a three-run home run in the first inning.

On April 11 it was also a 10-0 loss to Kellenberg. Colleen Dunn threw a one-hitter with nine strikeouts and only two walks. Amanda Crimarco hit a two-run homer in the second inning.

The next day the team lost 11-1 to Sacred Heart. Lauren Williams hit a home run and recorded three RBI.

Boys Lacrosse: On April 9 the team defeated Xavieran 15-2. Tim Ahern led the offense with five goals and two assists. Steven Milhaven also had five goals.

On April 11 the team was defeated 8-2 by St. John the Baptist. Christian Turri amassed three goals and an assist. John McCullough recorded five saves for the Gaels.

Girls Lacrosse: The team won its only game of the week by a score of 8-6 over Mary Louis Academy. Alyssa James had three goals and an assist, while Jessica Bishop posted four saves.
