Port Washington Sports Notebooks: April 15-21

The latest sports action in the area.

There are so many sports out in the Port Washington area, it can be a full-time job just sifting through all of the action. Luckily, you have Patch and we will get you caught up in one convenient place each week. 

Here’s what the local Port Washington teams have been up to this week:

Port Washington:


Baseball
:  The Vikings lost two of three to Calhoun. On April 15 they won 3-1 behind Bryce Keller’s strong pitching. He struck out an incredible 16 batters while allowing only one run. At the plate, he also did damage as he was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. On April 16 they lost 7-1. Tom Murphy tossed a one-hitter, striking out seven batters and walking four. He also went 2-for-4 with three RBI.On April 18 they were shutout 6-0. Zach Mastrangelo tossed the complete game shutout allowing only four hits. Kevin Hiss had two RBI for Calhoun.

Softball:
 The Vikings won all three games this week to improve to 8-1. On April 16 they won 15-2 over Valley Stream Central. Alex Caprariello had an incredible game as she hit three home runs and had seven RBI. Additionally, she was the winning pitcher as she tossed five inning and recorded 12 strikeouts. On April 18 they posed another dominating effort, this time a 16-2 win over Hempstead. Siria Castillo was the winning pitcher, as she threw four innings with seven strikeouts without walking a batter. The next day they beat Great Neck South 12-3. Carrie Rybecky and Alex Caprariello both hit home runs, with Rybecky driving in four runs on the day.

Boys Lacrosse: On April 16 the Vikings were defeated 11-5 by Syosset.  Andrew Keith led the attack with two goals and four assists.On April 19 they edged MacArthur 7-6. The decisive goal was scored by John Crawley late in the fourth quarter, it was his second goal of the day. 

Girls Lacrosse:  In their lone game of the week, the Vikings were ousted by Garden Cit by the score of 15-12. Jackie Jahelka had a dominating performance as she posted six goals to lead the Trojans.

Manhasset:


Baseball: The team defeated Roslyn 10-5 on April 15. Lukas Prather was the star of the game as he went 3-for-3 with three RBI and runs scored.The next day they were bested by the Mineola 10-4. Nick Cerame was the winning pitcher, tossing four shutout innings in relief. Prather hit a home run for Manhasset.

Softball: 

Manhasset dropped two of three during the week. On April 15 they lost 18-2 to East Rockaway. Jessica Deptulski was 5-for-6 with four RBI and Gianna Cilluffo was 4-for-5. On April 17 they beat Wheatley 12-4. Murphy McGorry, a freshman, tossed a two-hitter for the win. She also went 2-for 6 with two RBI at the plate.Also, on April 19 they were edged by Valley Stream South 10-8. Brianna Schippell  two-run triple in the eighth was the difference. The final out of the game was the robbed home run off the bat of McGorry.

Boys Lacrosse:  The Indians won on April 17 over Lynbrook 10-6. Matt Gavin had four goals and an assist, and Mike Fahey added two goals.On April 20 they were defeated 8-4 by John Jay Cross River. There are no statistics available for this game.

Girls Lacrosse:  The Indians had a dominating week, winning all three of their games. On April 15, it was a 16-5 victory over Long Beach. Lindsey Ronbeck scored four goals to lead the way.On April 18 it was a 20-6 rout over Plainedge. Once again, Ronbeck led the scoring. This time she recorded three goals.Their most recent win came on April 20 by the score of 11-6 over Summit. Ronbeck scored five goals in this game, Sarah Barcia chipped in with two goals as the Indians move to 7-1 on the year.

St. Mary’s


Baseball

This week the Gaels were swept by St. John the Baptist. On April 15 they were shutout 10-0. Chris Gaffney was 3-for-3 with three RBI with Greg Egan recording the victory.On April 17 it was a 7-1 loss. Brian McLaughlin was 2-for-3 with a three-run home run, which turned out to be the deciding run.In the final game of the series, the Gaels were defeated 8-0. Chris Lemorocco tossed six shutout innings while allowing only one hit.

Softball

The lady Gaels dropped all three games this week. The first game was on April 15 in a 10-0 loss to St. Anthony’s. Gabby Marcheschi tossed a two-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts.On April 17 they were defeated 11-1 by Our Lady of Mercy. Kristy Broody was the star of the game with a 3-for-3 performance with a three-run homer.Holy Trinity shut them out 10-0 on April 19. Alyssa Bavaro was the winning pitcher, she also was 1-for-2 with a two-run triple in the game.

Boys Lacrosse

The boys won both their games this week. On April 15 it was a 17-4 win over St. Raymond. Billy Meed and Stephen Millhaven both scored three goals in the win.On April 19 it was a 19-3 win over St. Dominic. Billy Meed had four goals and one assist with Tim Ahern adding three goals.

Girls Lacrosse: In their only game of the week, they defeated St. Francis Prep 13-9. Fah Kuhnan had five goals and one assist to lead the attack for the Gaels.
