Port Wrestling Takes Down Plainview JFK

Vikings dominate from start to finish.

In a contest on Thursday evening that was never close, The Port Washington Vikings defeated the Hawks, 57-21, on the mats at .

Plainview won only five of the fifteen matches, allowing The Vikings to dominate from start to finish. It was an ominous beginning for Plainview as they received their first of three forfeit losses on the very first weight match up. The Hawks forfeited at 140 pounds, 103 pounds, and 215 pounds while Port Washington never had to forfeit a single class. That amounted to an 18-point swing in the match.

The Vikings’ Boris Jasutousky would win the first non-forfeit of the night at 145 pounds as he pinned Plainview’s Louis Parnes just 25 seconds into round one. The Hawks would answer back by gaining 3 points as Larry Balter defeated Boris’ brother Lenny Jasutousky. At 160 pounds Plainview’s Dillon Schmitt would follow up with a victory of his own, pinning the Vikings’ Dennis McDonald in round two. After two straight wins Plainview had pulled close, making the match 12-9 in favor of Port Washington.

The next match would be at 171 pounds, when Plainview’s Matt Dejenero faced Port’s Vincent Baglio. Baglio was all over Dejenero in this one as he lead 7-1 after the first round. Baglio would continue the onslaught of Dejenero and pinned him for six points in round two. This extended Port Washington’s lead to 18-9, and Port never looked back the rest of the evening.

The next time Plainview would gain points on the Vikings wouldn’t come until the 285 lb weight class when Zach Greenberg defeated Anthony D’Aversa for three points in overtime. This back and forth grapple was the best match-up of the evening. Both were evenly matched, tiring and wearing down in this hard fought battle. The two went so hard at each other both even took spills off the mat and onto the hardwood floor. The crowd was alive during this match and gave both a standing ovation when it finished in extra time. Plainview’s Greenberg would take three points for his team, however he was one of few stars for the Hawks on this night.

If Plainview were to gain any momentum from Greenberg’s efforts it would have to come at a weight almost 200 pounds lighter, at 96 pounds, as the Hawks’ Eric Pincus would wrestle Port Washington freshman Noah White, in what would be White’s first ever varsity match. White delivered for the Vikings and stopped Plainview’s momentum by pinning Pincus just 51 seconds into the match.

The match was a solid win for the Port Washington Vikings as they improved to 6-3-1 on the year. Coach Anthony Schettino and his boys have done a commendable job so far this year, and will look to keep things rolling next Friday vs. Valley Stream Central.

Hero: Noah White- At 96 pounds, the freshman appeared nervous heading into his first ever varsity wrestling match. The nervousness wore off quickly as White pinned his opponent Eric Pincus just 51 seconds into the first round. This match followed a big Plainview win of 3 points and stopped the Hawks’ momentum.

Turning Point: Vincent Baglio’s second-round pin of Matt Dejenero at 171 pounds set Port Washington up for a big night as a then three point lead turned into a nine point lead, something the Vikings would never relinquish.

Quotable: From Vikings coach Anthony Schettino, “I really think it was a collective effort tonight, I don’t think anyone in particular won the match for us tonight. We had some young guys on the mat tonight, Noah White at 96 pounds did an awesome job for us tonight, he got a pin in his first ever match and he’s just a freshman.” He added, “Next Friday night we have our alumni night vs. Valley Stream Central, with us at 6-3-1, that will be a big one.”

Bottom Line: Port Washington maintained its momentum and prevailed throughout the match.

Key Stat: 18, as in the points Port Washington gained off forfeits in three separate weight classes from Plainview. Without the forfeits this could have been a different match as the Plainview coaches appeared to admit defeat after Noah White’s pin.

Who’s Next: Port Washington will compete in a tournament Saturday, but will play their next league match next Friday night, Jan. 14, on Alumni Night vs. Valley Stream Central.
