Port Girls Shut Out at Home in Field Hockey Opener

Vikings fall to Clarke 5-0 at home on Tuesday.

The Schreiber girls field hockey team was shutout in its 2013 season opener at home against Clarke on Tuesday.

Up 1-0 at the half, Clarke (1-0) took control of the game in the second half with four unanswered goals.

Disappointed Port Head Coach Joe Lederer said the team is behind a great deal on a lot of skills with a lot of work to do before its next game at New Hyde Park Thursday.

"The first half our defense was very solid and doing some good things for us but then they got down on themselves when they got down," said Lederer. "We're not where we wanted to be."

First half Schreiber goalie Vera Puglisi allowed just one goal in the first half before being replaced for the second half.

Scoring for Clarke was Jessica Gibaldi with two goals, and Brianna Ventola, Calien Berry and Bailey McNamara with one goal each.
