Schreiber Lacrosse Beats Herricks After Slow Start

Vikings' crushing defense holds Highlanders to one second-half goal in 18-5 victory.

The Schreiber Vikings varsity lacrosse team rebounded from their disappointing start with a convincing 18-5 victory over Herricks on Tuesday. The Vikings prevailed in a gritty, physical match that was closer than the final score indicated.

"Herricks was a scrappy team that kept the score close in the first half," coach Joseph Mascaretti said, referring to the Vikings' 9-4 halftime edge. "But our guys handled their toughness and were able to come out on top at the end."

The Vikings pulled away in the third quarter, though, outscoring Herricks, 6-1. The Port Washington defense never allowed Herricks to mount a sustained attack, repeatedly stripping the ball away from the Highlanders. Senior Josh Potter led the defense with his intense physical play, using his body to stop Herricks attackers in their tracks.

Once Schreiber got the ball, their offensive pressure proved too much for Herricks. Sophmore midfielder Jake Frocarro scored five goals, but the offensive effort involved the entire team. Freshman Richard Greenberg did not score, but was constantly in the thick of the action, digging out loose balls and helping to set up the offense with crisp passes. Greenberg finished the game with one assist, but his hustle helped establish the Vikings' aggressive offense. Senior attacker Owen Caruso scored three goals and had six assists, while Breig Bevilaque and Brandon Henne both had three goals and one assist. Henne played relentlessly, spinning through holes in the Herricks defense and keeping them off-balance and out of position.

Also scoring was Jack Vigilis with two goals, followed by Pat McCulloh and Nate Omeltchenko with one each. The Vikings spread the wealth on Tuesday with a coordinated attack that saw eight different players record at least one point.
