Schreiber Softball Dominates Uniondale in Big Win

Lady Vikings win second straight behind strong pitching from Alex Caprariello.

Schreiber softball won its second straight game and swept the season series with Uniondale on Wednesday, defeating the Knights (3-9 Conference AA-IV) by a score of 10-1. The win puts the Lady Vikings (5-6 Conference AA-IV) in first place in the conference.

Schreiber defeated Uniondale earlier in the season by the mercy rule, 12-0 in five innings, and Wednesday's game wasn't much different.

The Lady Vikings went down 1-0 in the top of the first, but scored 10 unanswered runs as the game went on. Schreiber set the pace in the bottom half of the inning, drawing two straight walks which eventually came around to score to give them a 2-1 lead at the end of the first inning.

Schreiber continued to take advantage of several Uniondale errors and stole six bases in the first three innings to grab a 4-1 lead.

"I think we've been pretty aggressive all season," Lady Vikings coach Eric Sutz said after the victory. "You want to capitalize on other team's mistakes, so I think we did what we needed to do to win today.

"Having said that," Sutz continued, "I think there's plenty of things that we need to work on going into Calhoun tomorrow. It's the last crossover with a good team in a higher conference, so we're going to have to play a lot better if we want to beat them."

Eighth-grader Alex Caprariello pitched a complete game, allowing just one hit and striking out 10. The effort is even more impressive since Caprariello had pitched her second no-hitter of the season just four days earlier.

"I think she's done a great job," Sutz said of his eighth-grade superstar. "She's talented. She's got a long way to go if she wants to become an elite pitcher, but she's willing to work and I think she's got a bright future."

But Sutz doesn't give all of the credit of developing Caprariello to himself.

"She's getting a lot of experience and I give a lot of credit to the girls on the team who have really taken care of her and showed her what it takes to be a varsity player in a very respectful way," Sutz said.

Christina Mouradian led Schreiber offensively. She went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two stolen bases.

The last two wins have been big for the Lady Vikings, who had lost their six previous games. But there are still four games left for Schreiber, who will be looking to lock up a Conference AA-IV title.

"The previous games were the crossover games where we had to play teams from a conference ranked higher than us," Sutz said about his team's recent play. "I think we played really well, but we just couldn't get a key hit in those losses. But the good play carried over into the last two games with Uniondale and Hempstead. I think with the talent we have, these are games we should win."

The Lady Vikings will look to continue their winning ways Thursday at Calhoun. First pitch is schedule for 4:45 p.m.
