Vikings Lacrosse Clinches Playoff Spot

After tight win over Plainview JFK, Vikings lacrosse clinches Conference I playoff berth.

The Schreiber boys varsity lacrosse team can breathe a little easier with Friday's 11-9 win over the Plainview JFK Hawks.

The victory qualified the Vikings (5-2 Conference I, 8-3 overall) for the Nassau County Conference I playoffs, starting later this month.

"This was a pivotal win and I'm very proud of the boys." said coach Joe Mascaretti after the team's fifth conference win in its last six games.

The Vikings got off to a slow start, to say the least, being held without a goal through the first quarter. For team's sake and thanks to goalie Cody White, who made 10 saves on this afternoon, the team only trailed 2-0 with three periods remaining.

And the second quarter was a different story. The Vikings tallied seven goals by six different players — Brieg Bevilacque, Owen Caruso, John Crawley, Christian Gordon, Jake Froccaro and Brendan Henne — and took a 7-5 lead into halftime.

"We saw it slip away in the first quarter but we came back," said Crawley, who co-led the team with three goals along with Henne. "We came back by beating them on groundballs, keeping possession and not forcing shots."

The team continued to play well in the third quarter with two goals by Crawley and one by Henne. Froccaro scored the team's lone fourth-quarter goal.

Coach Mascaretti said he liked what he saw out of his team against Plainview (4-3 Conference I, 6-5 overall). "They overcame adversity in the second half," he said, "when penalties could have changed the game's momentum."

Now that the playoff spot for the Vikings is certain, the next four games will determine their seeding. "Depending on how we finish out the season will determine who we battle against in the playoffs," said Julian Watts, a new assistant coach who played with Mascaretti at Hofstra.

The Vikings have a 4:45 start at Schreiber on Tuesday when they take on the Oceanside Sailors.
