Swingtime Big Band Music at The Bandshell

On Friday, June 20 at 8:15pm at the Sousa Band Shell in Sunset Park, the Swingtime Big Band, led by Steve Shaiman, returns for its seventh annual performance as part of the summer concert season in Port Washington.

The band is presenting a program called “Celestial Swing,” with music from the Great American Songbook focused on the sun, the moon and the stars.

These heavenly bodies have been the inspiration for countless American popular songs, and the 20-piece Swingtime Big Band compiled a constellation of classic melodies for the Port Washington audience this summer.  With an eye towards the sky, this authentic Swing Era ensemble will perform such classics as “Stardust,” “How High the Moon,” “Sun Valley Jump,” “My Blue Heaven” and “Sunrise Serenade,” just to name a few. The songs bring to life the music of such great bandleaders as Artie Shaw, Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Ray Anthony, Ted Heath and Gene Krupa.  The program also features SWINGTIME’s traditional patriotic tribute to the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces past and present.

Vocalist Jerry Costanzo spotlights the Great American Songbook, saluting such stellar singers as Nat ‘King’ Cole (“Destination Moon”) and the immortal Frank Sinatra (“East of the Sun,” “Moonlight in Vermont,” and “Fly Me to the Moon.”)
