Get Ready for SOUPer Bowl 2011

The event takes place Feb. 5 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

If you've been yearning to sample Port Washington's culinary offerings – at least when it comes to soups – Feb. 5 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. is your chance. That's when local restaurants and food establishments will donate their best soups as they compete for the title of 2011 SOUPer Bowl Champ. The event will take place at the

"Last year, won in both categories for their Tex Mex Turkey Chili soup – the Judge's Choice Award and the People's Choice Award," said Bobbie Polay, executive director of the , which organizes the SOUPer Bowl.

For the price of admission – adults pay a $7 "touchdown" fee, kids pay a $3" field goal" fee – attendees receive a spoon, hand stamp and ballot, along with the chance to sample two ounces of each soup donated by local chefs. Also on hand: plenty of bread and crackers.

Tasters vote for their favorite soups, and when all the ballots are tallied, the 2011 SOUPer Bowl Champ is determined. The winner will receive the “People’s Choice Award.”

A select judges' panel will decide the winner of the Judges’ Choice Award.

The Chamber of Commerce is organizing this event, and will donate a portion of the net proceeds to the   Food Pantry.

After last year's event, which drew 350 people, the Chamber donated $300 to the Twin Pines Food Pantry. The remainder of the net proceeds was used to support various Chamber of Commerce projects, Polay said.
