Ocean to Sound Relay to Benefit Cancer Research

Bethpage FCU joins up with Greater L.I. Running Club to sponsor 50-mile event.

is joining forces with to sponsor a charitable running relay to benefit cancer research. 

The Bethpage Ocean to Sound 50-Mile Relay and Charitable Challenge, now in its 27th year, will raise money to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

More than 1,000 runners are expected to cover 50 scenic miles through 15 different Long Island towns stretching from to Oyster Bay.

The event is scheduled for 8 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012. (A 7 a.m. early start time is available for teams anticipating the need for more than 8 hours to complete the 50 miles.)

The course will traverse a 50 mile route extending from Jones Beach State Park - Field 2, up to Cedar Creek Park, and then through Seaford, Massapequa, Farmingdale, Old Bethpage, Huntington, Cold Spring Harbor, Syosset and Oyster Bay Cove. The race will finish at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay.

Each team will consist of 8 runners. Team members will take turns running one section of the 8-leg relay. Each leg is between 5 and 7 miles. Each participant will be given a commemorative t-shirt and an invitation to the post-race party  Roosevelt Park. The post-race party will include unlimited food and beverages, live music and an awards ceremony.

Team categories include Men’s Open, Women’s Open, Mixed Open, Men’s Masters, Women’s Masters, Mixed Masters, Men’s Senior Masters, Women’s Senior Masters, Corporate, Law Enforcement/Firefighter, Physically Challenged, and One Person Teams.

Teams must register online at The Greater Long Island Running Club. The cost: $360/team if registered by Sept. 16. $400/team if registered between Sept. 17 and Sept. 22.  $40/one-person team.


No day-of-race entries will be accepted.
