Here's a chance to paddle around Manhasset Bay and do your part for the community. It's the seventh annual Manhasset Bay Kayak Run, taking place Saturday Aug. 13, 2011. All proceeds from the run will benefit the , a nonprofit organization that raises funds for local charities.
The fun starts at 9 a.m. with a blast from a canon, the beginning of the run. Kayakers can paddle at their own pace to one of many designated locations on the bay where they can pick up raffle tickets. The more locations visited, the more raffle tickets to collect. At 12:30 p.m., the canon fires again, signaling the time to go ashore and head for the , for a 1 p.m. raffle drawing.
Registration forms are available at Town Dock, , and the in the Building. Or download the form from the Town of North Hempstead website. The entry fees are: adults over 20, $25; young adults and children, $5.00; day of event registration $35. Forms and entry fees may be dropped off at Atlantic Outfitters.
Everyone is welcome, and no experience is necessary. Children and teenagers under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. All participants must wear an approved personal flotation device.
Discounted kayak rentals will be available at Atlantic Outfitters. Kayaks may be launched from the Town Dock, Manorhaven Park, Inspiration Wharf, and anywhere there is access to the bay.
