‘When Will My Street Be Plowed?’

The answer to the most popular question at the North Hempstead's 311 Call Center.

After the snow, if there were one pressing question by North Hempstead residents, it’s this: when will my street be plowed?

That’s according to the Town of North Hempstead’s 311 Call Center. Here’s what the town tells callers:

“The Town dispatches sanders and/or snowplows depending upon weather conditions. Initially sanders are sent to remedy icy conditions; typically intersections, schools and firehouses are sanded first. Likewise, snowplows are first sent to roadways containing schools and firehouses. Plows are dispatched at the discretion of the Superintendent of Highways, normally after 3" of snowfall. The Town has a 24 hour window after a snow storm has stopped to rid the roadways of excess snow, and plow operators make every effort not to plow in driveways and dead ends.

“In cases of emergency, contact your Police Precinct and they can direct the Highway Department to your location should the need for a sander or snowplow be immediate.”
