War of 1812 Discussion: Professor Joshua Smith of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy will examine some of the maritime aspects of the War of 1812 and its several interpretations in "Free Trade and Sailors' Rights? Reconsidering the Naval War of 1812." On the war's bicentennial, Smith will look at the myths surrounding naval aspects of the war, including their relationship to the start of the war, how it was fought by American frigates and privateers on the high seas and by squadrons on the Great Lakes, as well as on its enduring impact.
