Family Fun: Live Theater, Live Music And Bottle Rockets

Here are just some of the family-fun happenings taking place in the region this weekend.

  • Take the kids to see ‘Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,’ the beloved children's book-turned-musical at John W. Engeman Theater, 250 Main Street, Northport. Saturday, 11 a.m., Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Tickets $15.
  • There’s a children’s carnival at St. Luke Church at  20 Candlewood Path, Dix Hills. Food, DJ, Raffles, Amazing Gift Baskets, Prizes, and 50/50 Drawing. Saturday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • See P.D. Eastman’s  “Go, Dog, Go” brought to life colorfully on stage with jazz-themed music, singing and dancing at the Long Island Children’s Museum, 11 Davis Avenue, in Garden City, Saturday and Sunday 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Learn more. Fee: $9 with museum admission
  • Children in grades 3-8 can build a bottle rocket at the Cradle of Aviation Museum workshop Saturday, 10 am.-1 p.m.. There, they can add a parachute, streamers, wings, or fins to keep the rocket aloft. The bottle rockets will be filled partially with water, attached to an air compressor, and then launched off the museum’s launch pad with the guidance of museum staff. See how long you can keep your bottle rocket in the air. Participants will compete for a rocket trophy. Limit one rocket per participant. Free with museum admission, pre-registration is required
  • On Sunday, Nassau County Museum of Art offers a 1 p.m. docent-led family walk-through of the exhibition and supervised art activities for the whole family beginning at 1:30 p.m. Special family-friendly gallery guides of the main exhibition are available in the galleries.   • The Long Island Youth Orchestra peforms Saturday at Walt Whitman High School’s Performing Arts Center in Huntington Station at 2 p.m. The concert will include Nicolai’s Overture to the Merry Wives of Windsor, Glazunov’s March, Op. 76 and Sibelius’ Finlandia. In addition, three featured soloists will perform.
