Listing Manager: Merrie Hines

Child's World Nursery School (CWNS) has operated as a non-sectarian, non-profit community service of the United Methodist Church of Port Washington for more than 30 years. Child's World participates in the Universal Pre-K Program, under the authorization of the Port Washington School District. The school is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and licensed by the New York Office of Children and Family Services.

CWNS offers programming for 2 to 4 year olds that is designed to stimulate and provide opportunities for individual growth. The philosophy at Child's World Nursery School is that the best way to prepare our children for the future and foster a lifelong love of learning is through the power of play. Through play, children engage their natural inclination to explore, investigate, experiment — a process of learning that has been found to enhance academic success and promote self-esteem. At CWNS, their goal is to promote social, emotional, intellectual and physical development through enriching group activity and discovery, and also to provide an environment in which children learn at their own pace.

Child's World Nursery School offers morning and afternoon classes as well as extended day programming. Students may also participate in a Stay and Play program, an after school initiative that extends your child's day for up to three days per week.

In addition to parent involvement in the classroom experience, the CWNS staff are always available to address questions and concerns about each child's development. Parents will also have the opportunity to meet individually with their child's teacher during two scheduled conferences during the school year.

I had so much to say I could not fit it all, here is the rest. Child's World certainly teaches age appropriate lessons without taking the joy out of learning. For example what fun was it for my younger child to learn colors by wearing the color of the day and walking into a classroom drenched in that color, or my older one to walk in his classroom decorated from ceiling to floor with a space theme bopping my head on Saturn as I walked him into class and seeing the look on his face. I always left my children knowing that most importantly they were SAFE, and were going to have a fun filled day of LEARNING. As parents I feel that all learning is not to be put onto upon the shoulders of the teacher no matter preschool, middle, or high school but as a parent to take responsibility for you child's academics by teaching at home as well. I have great respect for
Ms. Missy, Ms. Montana, Ms. Laura, Ms. Donna, Ms. Heather, Ms. Otti teachers that my children and myself are blessed to have had, and of course Mrs. Merrie Hines a wonderful director and all I consider friends. If you remember I had said we moved to N.C. and now we are moving back to N.Y. (once a New Yorker always a New Yorker) and I bet you know where my youngest will attend Pre-K Yep CHILD'S WORLD, I am so looking forward to it but most important so is she. So please do not take what this marilyn glynn says but to see for yourself. I took the time to write this all for a reason, do not let your child miss out!!!

Child's World nursery school is more then just a fine learning institution, it is a family institution. The teachers teach age appropriate lessons in both academics and social development. They treat each child as if they were their own and truly care for not just the child but the entire family as well. I know this for a fact when we lost our home in a fire Child's World was my saving grace. They took care of my children (free of charge) while we dealt with all that comes with loosing all you have. They gathered clothes and toys from the wonderful families that you will find at Child's World. Like I said before they took care of us no differently then if we were their own family members. Now as for the ABC's and 123's and all the other academics they are the tops. Teachers teach age appropriate lessons taught through play, which If you know anything is how children learn best.
Both of my children attended Child's World at different ages so I have had experience with almost every teacher in the school and they are all excellent. We have since moved to N.C. and I was told by both of their teachers that my my son and daughter were the most well rounded children that they have had come through there classrooms (if you have trouble believing this, email JMPHOTO28@aol.com I will email you their report card). I attribute this to Child's World for instilling in my children a passion for learning and confidence to stand on their own.

I don't know Marilyn Glynn, but I certainly do know Child's World Nursery School. My children were students there in the late 90s, and then I worked there from 2000 until 2010. It is a wonderful place to be a child. Children learn the alphabet as they are ready to learn. It's a fact, Ms. Glynn, that if you force reading before the time of readiness, you will suck the joy out of reading. And, a person who does not read not only does not have access to the world, he or she will not be successful in life.

As to teachers just being in it for the paycheck? Ha! If I were there just for the paycheck, call me a fool. That's not why teachers teach, especially preschool. Teachers teach because it is gratifying. It also happens to be fun to be around children all day. That makes up for the limited amount of dollars.

And the kids! The joy on a child's face when something new is discovered. When a new friend is made. When the two different colors make a third. When the rocket really blasts off. It's not all about reading, Ms. Glynn. Children learn through play, through socializing, and over time.

You mentioned Merrie Hines, who, incidentally, is not the owner. But, she runs CWNS as if it were her own. She cares about the children, their parents, and the teachers. She cares about the building and the grounds, and everyone around her. If you can find me a better person to run Child's World Nursery School, I would be very surprised.

As a parent of four children who have attended Child's World and a former elementary and preschool school teacher I can tell you from years of experience that Child's World is an excellent preschool. The children learn the foundations of school through an age appropriate program with a professional, warm and caring staff. In today's age, many of the early childhood programs have unfortunately adhered to a philosophy of jamming education down children's throats. This is not an effective way of teaching. At Child's World, the children are exposed to many creative age appropriate activities that build social skills and stimulate learning while honoring each child's individualism. The children at Child's World are happy and engaged in learning and I am grateful to the wonderful teachers for providing my children with the greatest memories of preschool.

I have nothing but the highest praise for Child's World. We moved to Port Washington mid-way through the school year and did extensive research on area preschools. As an educator myself with a masters in early childhood teaching, I knew I wanted my daughters in an environment in which young children learn through play. The knowledge they gained each day was amazing - from the letter of the week to watching butterflies hatch to the all important social skills that will be their solid foundation for life. The teachers are warm, intelligent, nurturing and firm. The director obviously cares deeply for her staff and students and made our transition to Port Washington a positive experience by working with us to make an excellent preschool education possible within our financial constraints. My oldest daughter is now in kindergarten, and I know that Child's World was a huge factor in her being prepared and ready for elementary school.

Childs World is such a wonderful Pre-school. Many of the parents including myself believe that we have given our children a gift by sending them to Childs World. Every day the children enter the classroom to find an amazing experience waiting for them. One such example is taking a trip to the moon in a rocket ship made of boxes which they then follow up with a trip to the Cradle of Aviation Museum. Two of my children attended Childs World and were more than prepared for the social and educational aspects of elementary school.

My child is currently enrolled in Childs World. Not only has she developed and improved her academic and social skills--but she is so incredibly happy there!!!! The kids learn through play and songs. They not only learn the alphabet, but also the days of the week, important social skills, and simple addition. You don't need a pencil, a chair and a marble notebook to learn. I appreciate that Child's World finds so many fun ways to teach my daughter. She is four---she needs to play--she needs to learn and Childs World finds a way to combine these two activites.

5 stars for customer service on the telephone. According to school representatives, students are taught the alphabet and age-appropriate reading and writing lessons. Parents I know in the community who send their children here that I've spoken have said very positive things about Child's World.
