Several parts of the budget are exempt from the so-called "cap" and not included in theRead More 2%, including mandatory contributions to the teachers retirement fund and capital expenses.

Can someone explain how a 3.92% increase meets the 2% tax cap criteria?
Shown here with her son, Chris Nadolne says she is running for Port Washington School Board in part to advocate for the younger population in the community.
Archie Bunker May 13, 2013 at 09:18 pm
The last answer is troubling .... How does a 2% cap translate into a 3.29% increase All this meansRead More is more money for the teachers and a candidate who never saw a tax increase she didn't like

The Port Washington School District, like many others on Long Island is a ineffective, bloatedRead More bureaucracy Consolidate the districts down to two or three and get rid of all the layers of mis-management Then maybe, I will vote for the budget

Lies. Public education is a blithering mess, some great teachers, and a whole lot of incompetentRead More and lazy administrators, drugs, gangs, apathy to violence in the schools. I'm a victim of the Port Washington schools, no one should be subject to those losers. Besides, if putting educated professionals into the community is the goal, this system has failed miserably, because of the high taxes, due in part to the school tax components, none of us can afford to move back and fund the next generation.

Of course you have to pay school taxes, whether you CHOOSE to pay private tuition or not. The publicRead More education system exists in the state's interest to create a pool of educated people to perpetuate itself (which is what every government does, and should do). You don't like it (and I can tell you Port's is very good indeed), and prefer a private school, that's YOUR issue, not mine. Vouchers are too often used in religious schools, and that is a First Amendment issue. You pay for it, don't expect me to. Bad enough we have to pay busing for private schools.

Super Cool Judy...Well deserved and good luck in your new position!!

This was a very powerful presentation with a lot of great tips for parents. It highlighted how muchRead More more we need to be aware of our children's on-line activity. We teach them not to talk to strangers, but it is kids they know that are more apt to be the problem. It was very sad that more parents did not show up to hear Mr Halligan speak.

My older daughter and her husband relocated to the Binghmaton NY area a few years ago. They are bothRead More employed by the Raymond Corp in Greene NY. Binghamton University is a tremendous asset to this area of upstate NY. I'm glad it is considered one of the gems in the SUNY system. If not for this University, the Binghamton area would be a very poor place to live.

George: I know a lot of whether a school can attend has to do with whether the representatives areRead More in the area at the time of the college fair.
George Mulligan April 4, 2013 at 01:34 pm
Four colleges that members of my family attended are missing: Fordham University, ProvidenceRead More College, Roger Williams University and College of Mount St. Vincent. I wonder if these schools were invited.

We attended last year and it was great. Tons of really good information. Planning on attendingRead More again this year.

I wouldn't have anyone wave the white flag until Smithtown actually votes a budget down.
Concerned Commackian April 16, 2013 at 08:54 pm
Heart, wave the white flag already. I dont think you have a prayer of beating Former on points!! OnRead More second thought, put that white flag away......im having too much fun reading these exchanges!!!!!

Canon received about $100 million in government aid, including tax breaks from New York State andRead More Suffolk County, and an extra lane on each of the Long Island Expressway service roads. In return you got not new jobs, but just a relocation of existing jobs from four offices in Lake Success and one in Manhasset. Canon “hopes” to add 750 more jobs within 10 years. Wait and see if that happens. Bottom line is that you paid Canon $100 million to keep, not add, 1300 jobs, about $80,000 a job. What a good deal. Wee Little Heart, is that all you got.
