Leo Battista, a Grumman Aeorspace retiree and longtime Port Washington resident, died on Monday, Nov. 28, in Sunrise, Florida. He was 85 years old, and passed away of complications related to kidney failure. Battista lived in Port Washington for more than 40 years. A familiar face for decades at Port Washington’s Manorhaven Park and Bar Beach Park, where he played competitive paddleball well into his 70s, Battista is survived by his wife of 59 years, Clara; their eight children and seven grandchildren, who knew him as "Poppy"; as well three-dozen nieces and nephews. News spreads across the world about Jobs' death.
One month after stepping down as chief executive, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has passed away. The New York Times reported: Mr. Jobs stepped down from the chief executive role in late August, saying he could no longer fulfill his duties, and became chairman. He underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer in 2004, and received a liver transplant in 2009. In a statement, Apple said “Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. An army in blue showed up in Selden Thursday for the viewing of fallen Nassau County Police officer Geoffrey J. Breitkopf.
Thousands of police officers in dress blue uniforms lined up outside the Selden Fire Department Thursday evening to pay tribute to fallen Nassau County police officer Geoffrey J. Breitkopf. Breitkopf, 40, a decorated veteran of the elite Bureau of Special Operations, was accidentally shot and killed Saturday by an MTA officer while responding to a call in Massapequa Park. He also was a volunteer firefighter in Selden, where he lived with his wife and two children. Among those on hand for Thursday services were Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey. Services for Breitkopf will be held Friday at St. Margaret of Scotland Roman Catholic Church, located at 81 College Road in Selden, beginning at 12:30 p.m. …

A lifelong Port resident, Carey was devoted to her family and her church.
Lillian Carey, a lifelong Port Washington resident, died peacefully on Monday, Jan. 24, 2011. Carey is survived by two sisters, a brother-in-law and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was known by her relatives as a loving woman who was extremely devoted to her family and her church, St. Peter of Alcantara. She hosted many family gatherings, especially on holidays, said her great-niece, Allison Gomez. "She was the kindest person you would ever meet," Gomez said. "She would do anything for you – and never once thought about what was best for her, only what was best for the people around her." Carey's wake will he held at Austin F. A lifelong resident of Port Washington, Picardi believed in giving back to his community.
Julius A. Picardi, a lifelong resident of Port Washington and a dedicated community servant, passed away on Dec. 15, 2010. He was 84. Picardi was born on May 29, 1926, to Alexander and Rosina Picardi, who hailed from Voltara Irpina, Naples, Italy. Julius Picardi graduated from Port Washington High School in 1944. He married Mary Truss of Great Neck in May 1953. “He never fought in a war but he was still part of the greatest generation,” noted Picardi’s son, also named Julius, referring to the Americans who helped build the nation into a superpower. The elder Picardi attended electrical trade school and worked at LILCO for 39 years. As a licensed electrician, he was well-known around town for the many small contracting jobs he completed …

Ruth Blumenfeld, who lived in Port Washington for more than 40 years, died peacefully on Dec. 31 in Florida. Her son Noah was by her side. For the last 22 years, she was married to Myron Blumenfeld, the former chairman of the Long Island State Park Commission, whom she knew for years as a member of The Community Synagogue. Both widowed, it was the second marriage for each. Ruth Blumenfeld is survived by two sons from her first marriage and two stepdaughters from her marriage to Myron Blumenfeld, and a total of six grandchildren. Ruth Blumenfeld worked for many years as an executive secretary, including at a wholesale drug company in Port Washington. She was also a life member of Hadassah, a volunteer organization of women dedicated to …
