Police activity on Long Island.

Mineola A Mineola man was sentenced to 7 years in federal prison Friday on charges of trading child pornography over the internet. Michael Hopkins, 25, pleaded guilty to the charges in U.S. District Court in Central Islip and still faces charges of allegedly raping a 14-year-old Suffolk girl he met on the internet. While Hopkins allegedly did not coerce the girl to have sex with him, she is legally under the age of consent of 15. Hopkins has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors said that Hopkins had been trading the images online for the past 8 years. According to authorities, Hopkins was originally arrested in 2010 on the pornography charges which led to the discovery of the alleged rape by both FBI and Suffolk police. Sea Cliff Two teens were…

Port Washington Man Arrested for Grand Larceny

The man is accused of depositing invalid checks at a bank.

A Port Washington man was accused Wednesday of knowingly depositing invalid checks and then withdrawing the proceeds.   New York State Police say Antonio Raimo, 42, of Port Washington opened a bank account with Peoples United Bank in Port Washington. After opening the new account, Raimo deposited two checks totaling $5,800, police say. Soon after, Raimo made withdrawals for all of the funds, according to police. Both checks later came back cancelled due to insufficient funds, authorities said.  Raimo is charged with third degree grand larceny and is scheduled to be arraigned in Nassau County First District Court in Hempstead on Wednesday.

Police Investigate Bomb Threat On Main Street

The threat, reported at Astoria Federal Savings, was unfounded.

Authorities found nothing threatening at Astoria Federal Savings Wednesday after a morning bomb threat prompted the cordoning off of sections of Main Street around the bank. "At approximately 8:43 a.m. a bomb threat was reported at Astoria Federal Savings Bank at 110 Main Street," said Assistant Police Chief James Salerno. First responders including the Port Washington Police District and Port Washington Fire Department were on the scene.  The threat, Salerno said, was unfounded.  Main Street was reopened by 11:40 a.m. The investigation is ongoing, Salerno said.

Cops Nab LIRR Bandit

Police say the suspect was wanted for three separate incidents on the Port Washington line.

A 20-year-old man was accused of Tuesday of stealing from Long Island Railroad passengers on the Port Washington line The Metropolitan Transportation Authority say Thomas Gray of 214th Place is charged with stealing an iPhone on Jan. 26, an iPod on Jan. 6 and a purse on Feb. 19, 2011.  In the Jan. 26 incident, a woman on the 7:55 a.m. train from Port Washington reported her iPhone stolen, according to the MTA. The iPhone was later recovered using an app that tracked the missing phone. On Monday, an LIRR crew recognized the suspect who was aboard the 10:49 a.m. train from Port Washington. Gray refused to pay the train fare, and was asked to leave the train at Bayside, the MTA said. The train crew notified the MTA Police, who then …

Nassau County Police have issued composite sketches of two unknown women wanted in connection with a series of deception burglaries that are preying on elderly homeowners throughout the county. Cops are asking for the public's help in identifying the two women, one of whom was described as having a "bulging," or "wandering," eye. The pair, which are believed to be working as a team, are wanted in connection with a series of residential deception burglaries that began in December and have continued through January. Cops: Great Neck Man, 81, Charged with Indecent Exposure

The man exposed himself twice to two teenage girls, police say.

A Great Neck man was accused Sunday of exposing himself to two teenage girls, according to police. Nassau County Police said Amir Shooshani, 81, had exposed himself twice to two 13-year-old girls at the CVS at 1 Gussack Plaza in Great Neck on Sunday Dec. 4. One of those girls recognized him at the same store on Sunday, Jan. 29, and alerted police. Great Neck Estates police responded to the scene, taking the suspect into custody. Shooshani was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and two counts of exposure of person. He is due at First District Court in Hempstead on Feb. 10.

A criminal charge is only an accusation, and does not indicate convictions.  After being involved in an auto accident, a Port Washington woman was placed under arrest for D.W.I. on Sandy Hollow Road on Jan. 18 at 11:08 p.m. After being involved in a domestic incident, a Port Washington man was placed under arrest on Charles Avenue on Jan. 20 at 11:35 p.m. A Port Washington man was placed under arrest for disorderly conduct, assault, resisting arrest and unlawful possession of marijuana at Webster Avenue On Jan. 22 at 8:34 p.m.

2 Women Hunted in Deception Burglaries Preying on Elderly

Nassau County Police have issued composite sketches of two unknown women wanted in connection with a series of deception burglaries that are preying on elderly homeowners throughout the county. Cops are asking for the public's help in identifying the two women, one of whom was described as having a "bulging," or "wandering," eye. The pair, which are believed to be working as a team, are wanted in connection with a series of residential deception burglaries that began in December and have continued through January. Mangano: 8 Police Precincts to Merge Into 4; Port Washington Area Affected

6th to become 'community policing center; all 177 patrol cars will remain in current neighborhoods.

Claiming it will save money and not diminish police protection, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano announced Monday that the county's eight police precincts will merge into four. Four precincts, including the Second, which covers Plainview north of Old Country Road, will remain intact. Four others, including the Eighth, which covers south of Old Country Road, will be transformed into new community policing centers, Mangano said. The Second Precinct's coverage area will actually be extended south of Old Country Road, well into Massapequa. "Keeping residents safe is my number-one priority," Mangano said.
