As fishermen and farmers disappear, Long Island Traditions fights for the preservation of Long Island's contemporary maritime and farming culture throughout the region.</p> <p>To recognize and pay tribute to Long Island's diverse ethnic cultures, the organization supports Irish stepdance, African-American quilting, gospel and blues music, Jewish klezmer music, Native American stories and crafts, and the traditions of recent immigrants from Central and South America, India and Asia.</p> <p>Through field interviews and oral histories, LI Traditions seeks to break down the barriers that divide us, so that we can share in the power and excellence of our family traditions.</p> <p>In order to enhance studies of history and culture, LI Traditions offers three in-school education programs: Maritime Folk Arts program, ethnic folk arts programs, and programs that examine community architecture.</p>

John J. Daly Elementary School opened in 1927. It houses the district's pre-kindergarten program as well as students…More in kindergarten through fifth grade. Many people in the community describe Daly as "the family school" or the most culturally diverse elementary school in the Port Washington School District. Its principal, Mrs. Elaine Ajello, is proud of both descriptions because they truly define what Daly is and what is important to the faculty, staff, and parents.</p> <p>The school's mission is to bring the best possible education to all of its students through a culturally diverse learning community. Daly's faculty and staff work hard at understanding how each student learns and find innovative ways to deliver the curriculum so each child's yearly progress is monitored and celebrated.
