Leslie Gross has been North Hempstead's Town Clerk since her appointment in April 2007, following her predecessor's…More mid-term election to the New York State Assembly when Thomas DiNapoli was appointed New York State Comptroller. Ms. Gross was then elected Town Clerk by the residents of North Hempstead in November of 2007.
As Registrar of Vital Statistics, the Town Clerk issues and maintains all birth, marriage, and death certificates. The Town Clerk also oversees the licensing of dogs, hunting and fishing licenses, and taxi and limousine licenses, as well as maintaining all Town records, including Town Board meetings and public hearings. As a designated Marriage Officer, a responsibility she greatly enjoys, Ms. Gross has officiated at more than 200 wedding ceremonies since she became Town Clerk.
Prior to being Town Clerk, Ms.Gross was Executive Director of North Hempstead's newly-established Business & Tourism Development Corporation which was created to both stimulate commerce and raise the awareness of the Town's community resources.
In her capacity as Executive Director, Ms. Gross worked closely with the Town Supervisor, Town Council, Chambers of Commerce and various other government and community-based organizations. Since its inception, the BTDC has spearheaded projects including Bar Beach Family Fest, North Hempstead Day and created cable television programs including "Around The Town" and "A Taste of The Town" which profile The Town of North Hempstead's businesses, museums, charitable organizations etc.Prior to working for the Town of North Hempstead, Ms. Gross was the president and co-owner of a promotional marketing firm. Earlier, she held account executive positions with Ackerman Advertising in Glen Head, and AFIK Intertrade in New York City. She began her career in special education as a teacher of the hearing impaired after completing her master's degree at Northwestern University and her bachelor's degree at Ohio University.
Ms. Gross has long been active in North Hempstead's civic life, supporting numerous community organizations including: Rotary Club of Great Neck (Past President), Rotary International's District 7250 (Assistant District Governor), North Shore/LIJ Health System (Associate Trustee), Gift of Life (former Board Member), Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence (Board Member), The Amsterdam (past member of the community advisory board), The Children's Sports Connection (founding member) and a long-time member of Temple Judea in Manhasset.Town Clerk Gross grew up in Great Neck and has been a resident of Manhasset since 1980. She has been married for over 30 years to Howard Gross who is a management consultant. They are the proud parents of two married sons who live in Manhattan, and grandparents of two.
Charles Berman was appointed by the town board to replace Rocco Iannarelli, who stepped down after six years to…More accept a position with the New York Power Authority (NYPA). This is the second time that Berman has served as the Town of North Hempstead Receiver of Taxes.
Berman is a proven government affairs professional with a solid administrative background in business. His career in public service began when he was appointed Deputy Town Clerk for the town of Oyster Bay in 2000. He was responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the department. He assisted the elected clerk in providing quality service in a professional, courteous and cost-effective manner. Berman helped to revitalize and modernize the office and he oversaw the implementation of the state's automated hunting and fishing license system.
Starting in August of 2003, Berman was appointed North Hempstead Receiver of Taxes to succeed Ann Galante. He was responsible for the collection and distribution of all county, school, general and special district taxes within the town. While in office, Charlie's department mailed 180,000 tax bills and sent 100,000 electronic bills through Tax Service Organizations during four collection cycles. It also received and posted 288,000 tax payments, including 10,000 payments in person at Town Hall and it handled 60,000 telephone calls from the public.
In 2004, Charlie was appointed to serve as Assistant to the Chairman of the Nassau County Board of Assessors. There he served as the chairman's liaison to all divisions within the department. He wrote personal correspondence, did case work, and answered constituent inquiries. He also worked on special assignments including: coordinating the department's successful investigation of the over-billing practices of property tax reduction consultants with the NYS Attorney General's office. In 2009, the new County Assessor promoted Charlie to Director of the Assessment Assistance Division. There he helped to direct community services programs for the department and supervised a professional staff of over 30 CSEA clerical and call center personnel and field assessors.
Before his life in public office, Charlie was the Executive Vice President of Berman Agency, Inc. a family owned insurance brokerage firm that specialized in property and casualty, disability and life insurance products for personal and commercial clients. Prior to that he was the Director of Operations of Pandick Technologies, Inc. NY, a division of Pandick Press, which was a financial printer and a NYSE company. He received his bachelor's degree from SUNY Albany.
