The Port Washington Senior Community Service Center is a lively gathering place for senior citizens. Located in St.…More Stephen's church, the facility has been in operation for more than 35 years. Rather than face the prospect of lonely weekdays, seniors flock to the center to enjoy a nutritious lunch, and musical and cultural performances.</p> <p>Exercise, Tai Chi and Yoga classes help seniors remain fit and healthy. Monthly birthday parties and holiday celebrations feature local musicians and performances by children from area schools.</p> <p>Door-to-door transportation and trips to shopping centers and banks are offered daily. Professional staff offer assistance with completing medical forms and make referrals for services such as food stamps and financial counseling.</p> <p>Funding is provided by the Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs, the NYS Office for the Aging and the U.S. Department of Health. The Center is supported by the Town of North Hempstead and the Community Chest of Port Washington. </p>

Built in 1908, thousands of Port Washington students were educated in what was then known as the Main Street School until it closed in 1985. Thanks to a true grassroots effort, Landmark opened its doors as a community center on November 5, 1995. With 59 units of affordable housing for seniors and the developmentally disabled on our upper floors, Landmark is also home to the Port Washington Youth Council's Teen Center, the Port Washington Parent Resource Center, the Port Washington Children's Center and the Doctors' Gymnasium.</p> <p>The Jeanne Rimsky Theater is also housed at Landmark. Used from 1916-1985 as the Main Street School auditorium, the Jeanne Rimsky Theater has been renovated to provide 425 comfortable seats, a state-of-the-art sound system, a magnificent Steinway Concert Grand D piano, and an intimate setting to connect with the performers from anywhere in the theater.</p> <p>Landmark has hosted sold-out performances including musicians such as The Bacon Brothers, Joan Osborne, Broadway's Brian Stokes Mitchell, Christine Ebersole, Kelli O'Hara and Brian d'Arcy James, Latin-Pop star Raul Malo, and folk/rock icons Judy Collins, Steve Earle, Richie Havens, Janis Ian, Lucy Kaplansky, Shelby Lynne, Rickie Lee Jones, Jorma Kaukonen, The Kingston Trio, Tom Paxton, Jean Ritchie, Martin Sexton, Richard Shindell, Suzanne Vega and Dar Williams.</p> <p>The Jeanne Rimsky Theater also offers affordable rental space where a variety of events take place, such as dance performances, film screenings, opera rock concerts, body building exhibitions and much more.</p>

The Port Washington Family Development Center is a satellite of the Economic Opportunity Commission (EOC) of Nassau…More County, Inc. EOC is the designated Anti-Poverty Agency of Nassau County devoted to the facilitation and strengthening of individuals and families to move them out of poverty.</p> <p>Services provided include:</p> <p>Nutrition: An Emergency Food Pantry and the means to refer individuals or families for additional assistance when warranted are available. </p> <p>English as a Second Language:<b> </b>Referrals are provided as well as tutorial, homework assistance and other educational opportunities. Referrals are made when necessary for educational assistance, intervention and advocacy performed within the schools. Higher education assistance is provided, including information about EOC/CEDC Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Program.</p> <p>Senior Citizen Program:<b> </b>Advocacy is provided for Senior Citizens as well as Health and Nutrition workshops. The center serves as an employment site for Foster Grandparents and for seniors employed through the Senior Community Services Program.</p> <p>Aid to the Foreign Born:<b> </b>Community Organization Advocacy and other services provided to the foreign born reflect those provided to the population at large. In addition, they receive Immigration Assistance, Court Advocacy and Translation, free Income Tax Services and Community Assistance and English as a Second Language program referrals.</p> <p>Youth Development: Opportunities for youth leadership development through local Youth Councils is offered. Sports programs are provided. Recreation, tutorial and leisure time activities are conducted.</p>
