D.A. Rice: Allowing Underage Kids to Drink Alcohol This Prom and Graduation Season is a Crime

Nassau County District Attorney to appear in Social Host PSA to be shown in local movie theaters.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice is reminding parents of teenagers that, with prom and graduation season approaching, adults who provide alcohol to underage party guests will face criminal prosecution under the Nassau County Social Host law. "Don't worry about being the popular parent. Be the responsible one," Rice said. "There is no excuse, no explanation, and no reason to allow underage kids to drink alcohol in your home. Make the correct decision. Remember, parents who host lose the most." Rice will also appear in a public service announcement, produced by the Manhasset-based Coalition Against Substance Abuse (CASA), encouraging parents to be responsible. Driver Identified in Saturday Morning Crash

Great Neck man charged with driving while impaired and possession of marijuana.

Police have identified the driver of the BMW SUV that collided with a Dom's Tree Service truck early Saturday morning on Port Washington Boulevard. The crash, which caused serious traffic delays into the afternoon, was apparently the result of a drug and alcohol binge, police officials said. The driver of the BMW SUV, O'neil C. Hyman of Great Neck, was reportedly exceeding a speed of 100 mph at around 7:15 that morning, and police said he was under the influence of both drugs and alcohol. Police said Hyman is being charged with driving while impaired by a combination of drugs and alcohol (1192-4a), driving after having consumed alcohol while under the age of 21 (1192-a) and unlawful possession of marijuana (Penal Law 221.05). As Port Washington students and parents finalize their lists of New Year's Resolutions, a district-wide program designed to help children stay out of trouble and give parents a look into their kids lives was highlighted at last night's Board of Education meeting, the first in 2010. The Safety and Substance Abuse Task Force, which has been part of the Port Washington School District for nearly 25 years, brings an old adage, "it takes a village to raise a child," to mind.
