Research shows that the North Hempstead system is working well, but there's still room for improvement.
The Town of North Hempstead hosted a public meeting at Clinton G. Martin Park in New Hyde Park on July 28, addressing options for ambulance services for the town. And while the discussion concluded that the current system works, it was agreed that there is always room for improvement. Joseph Stefko, director of public finance at the Center for Governmental Research, in partnership with Hofstra University, researched and conducted a study for ambulance options and presented a baseline review for EMS and ambulance services. He presented this study at the July 28 meeting. Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano announced that the county will purchase two new, fuel efficient ambulances for its police department, using asset forfeiture funds, or money generated through the sale of assets seized in drug-related convictions. The two ambulances, which cost $300,000, would bring the department's fleet to 42. "It's a great day when we can turn the asset of a crime into a benefit for the community," Mangano said. "These new ambulances will help save lives." Nassau becomes first county in the nation to implement ambulance signage program to promote national campaign.
Nassau will become the first county in the United States to use ambulances as Baby Safe Haven drop-off sites, County Executive Ed Mangano announced during a Wednesday morning press conference. Baby Safe Haven allows mothers who feel they are unable to care for their children to legally and anonymously give them away to become wards of the state. Mangano said that the county is taking this step so that fewer mothers will abandon their children in dangerous places. "[This is] a program that provides mothers real options," Mangano said.
