Labor Day weekend is officially here, so we shared a few tips to make your weekend something to remember. Fire Island The power has finally been restored to the south shore island after last weekend's mess of a hurricane, and there isn't a better time to hit Fire Island than Labor Day. Whether you've been there before or not, there are plenty of things to do. You can get on a boat, fish, sail, surf or swim. There are also a number of great restaurants and bar on the island where you can enjoy one of the last summer weekends left! Oh...you must be referring to that event that is held each and every day of the year, from 5AM to 11PM. Now, yes, that is a real pain in the neck. If only this surfing competition was only for, say, 2 weeks.   more ›

Grills Still Available in Port for Last Minute Shoppers

No need to leave town for your Fourth of July BBQ equipment.

If you're still looking for a grill this holiday weekend, there's no reason to leave town. Whether you seek a top-of-the-line model, a simple hibachi, or a propane refill there are plenty of options in Port Washington.  Port residents like shopping locally for the convenience and the ability to save on time and gas. They also shop in town for the personal service. A grill can run anywhere from $10.99 for a steel hibachi or as much as $2,300 for a six-burner propane Weber Summit model with all the bells and whistles. At Shields Hardware, owner Patti Shields walks customers through the variety of grills, sharing her knowledge and a smile. "The first thing I'll ask you is what type of grill you have," Shields said. The store offers propane …

Port Residents Bring Blazing BBQ to Alper's Festival

Alper's Hardware helped raise money for the Community Chest with annual cook-off.

There was a lot of sauce, sweat and tears, but by the end of it all, the 2nd annual Alper's BBQ Festival left Port Washington residents well-fed and smiling. Local folks gathered on Irma Avenue off Main Street to cheer on their neighbors-turned-chefs and sample food from Port's barbecue restaurants on Sunday afternoon. Funds from the event were raised to benefit the Community Chest of Port Washington, a non-profit organization designed to raise funds for local charities. "We wanted to do a charity of some sort and we were trying to do it in conjunction with the store," said event organizer Adam Novick, who is one of owners of Alper's Hardware. "We were looking to do something for the Port Washington community and still cover a lot of …

Although a great get-together for a great cause, Bad Bob's should be called out for selling me raw baby back ribs. Ecchhh....My husband and I were disgusted. Anyway, thanks Alpers for organizing. You did a great job!   more ›

Much To Do in Port This Memorial Day Weekend

Staying in Port Washington for the long weekend? Here are some ideas to stay busy.

The long weekend is so close you can feel it. But what can you do if you're planning to stay home in Port Washington? "I'm going to my friend's barbecue and there are the fireworks," said Port Washington resident Sloan Mergler. "I don't really know what else is going on in Port this weekend." Well, read on, and perhaps you will find some more ideas of things to keep you entertained this weekend. For starters, there are the North Hempstead Beach Park (Bar Beach) fireworks on Saturday night that begin after sunset. Before the fireworks, starting at 6 p.m., there will also be two tribute bands to the Eagles and Bruce Springsteen, Desert Highway and Tramps Like Us, respectively. Admission to the fireworks is free and parking is $5 per car — a …

Port Students Flock to Hickory's Bar-B-Que

After celebrating 25th anniversary, it looks like barbecue joint is ready to spend 25 more in the community.

Eddie Pappalardo built it and they came. That is, a local eatery with an indoor smoker for meat and chicken just like he remembered from his university days in Amarillo, Texas. Hickory's Bar-B-Que, at 674 Port Washington Blvd., recently celebrated 25 years in Port Washington and enjoys great popularity not only here in town, but throughout Nassau County. Schreiber students in particular rave about the place. "I love Hickory's because it always remains true to its style of food," senior Brian Kennedy said. "It doesn't push itself beyond the limits of what it does best. Their approach is focused and as a result, the food is far better than its competitors." Hickory's menu includes barbecued ribs, chicken, pork, beer battered fish, hamburgers…

Harbor Q: A Different Kind of Barbecue

Enjoy a smokehouse BBQ meal in East Village fashion here in Port Washington.

Harbor Q, located directly across from Manhasset Bay, is a unique barbecue bistro and caterer that emphasizes atmosphere as much as its sweet-and-tangy smoked flavors. The industrial look of the eatery almost makes one forget that they are, in fact, at a barbecue establishment. Maybe it was the soft reggae music of Bob Marley playing in the background that made the barbecue experience so different. Before I sat down to enjoy complimentary kettle-cooked potato chips accompanied by warm gorgonzola cheese fondue, I noticed the rustic yet immaculate look of the cozy restaurant. Along the walls were black and white photos depicting fishing boats and harbor scenes. The photos were taken several years ago by the proprietor's mother, Monika Dorman…
