The Sun Shines on a Crowded HarborFest

Despite the threat of thunderstorms, an estimated 5,000 people attended the 20th annual HarborFest Dock Day and Craft Festival.

Even the threat of bad weather couldn't keep people away from the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce's 20th annual HarborFest Dock Day and Craft Festival on Sunday, with large crowds visiting the Town Dock for a day of food and fun. "This is our 20th HarborFest," said Warren Schein, co-president of Port Washington Chamber of Commerce. "It started off as a little, tiny event on a boat, and now it's a big, major event." Schein estimated the crowds to be upwards of 5,000 people. The day was kicked off with a performance by Mrs. Fredda Meltzer's kindergarten class from Manorhaven Elementary School, who waved American flags while they recited the Pledge of Allegiance. The group of kindergartners then sang "My Country 'Tis of Thee" and "America…

Port Washington Chamber of Commerce puts on its 20th annual HarborFest Dock Day and Craft Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

In most cities, Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, but in Port Washington, this Sunday's 20th Annual HarborFest Dock Day and Craft Festival really gets the town ready for some fun in the sun. Presented by the Chamber of Commerce and running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Town Dock, Baxter Pond and Lower Main Street, HarborFest will be a day of art, music, crafts and even a talent show. In addition, the Wells Fargo-sponsored stagecoach is returning to offer free rides from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., as well as cruises around the bay, which may or may not be invaded by pirates. According to Bobbie Polay, executive director of the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce, there will be something for everyone at the annual festival. "This is …

Port Washington Life: A Taste of Port Washington

A Taste of Port Washington cookbook features recipes from local restaurants.

As a committee member of the A Taste of Port Washington community cookbook, I was thrilled to see the final published book. As usual, local businesses and residents alike enthusiastically got involved to make the project a success. The Chamber of Commerce sponsored the project, solicited the recipes, did the editing, collaborated on the design, proofed the final version, and worked with the printer as a way to support Port Washington's restaurants and to celebrate our local multi-ethnic cuisine. The final book contains 277 recipes, including entrees, desserts and soups, plus helpful hints and an introduction on the history of Port Washington's food-related businesses. There are some great vintage photos inside the book as well. The …

Schumer Addresses Small Business Concerns

Sen. Charles Schumer said he believes 'the best is yet to come' for Long Island.

Growing up as the son of a small business owner gave Sen. Charles Schumer an understanding of the pains today's Long Island small businesses face in tough economic times. The statesman spoke of these aches and potential cures during his address earlier this week at Hofstra University. "I saw how small businesses struggle," the Democratic senator told the audience of watching his father, the owner of an exterminating business, work hard and meet the challenges many entrepreneurs face. The event, sponsored by the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce (NCCC) and hosted by Hofstra University, focused on the concerns of small businesses throughout Long Island. The notion of pain, and how to help turn things around, was on the tongues of many …

The May Newburger Women's Honor Roll Breakfast commemorates spectacular contributions from women in the Town of North Hempstead.

The May Newburger Women's Honor Roll celebrated Women's History Month during its 17th annual breakfast which recognized inspiring women in the Town of North Hempstead. The event, which was held at the Roslyn Claremont Hotel and hosted by Town Clerk Leslie Gross, was a celebration of outstanding women in the community. Out of the 16 women honored, three were Port Washington residents. "It is a spectacular and important opportunity to recognize the amount these women have done for our community," Supervisor Jon Kaiman said. "The common denominator in all of them is that they have all touched people's lives in one way or another." Along with Gross and Kaiman, Legislator Wayne Wink, the North Hempstead Town Board, Receiver of Taxes Charles …
