Port Washington varsity golf team finishes fourth at the Nassau County Championships, while senior Kelly Shon qualifies for New York State Championships.
For the third consecutive season, the Schreiber High School golf team won the Conference III championship. In 10 matches this season, the Vikings went 9-1 and shut their opponents out on four separate occasions. At the beginning of the golf team's season, coach Kathleen Doughty said she expected at least five of her golfers to qualify individually for the Nassau County Championships — and coach certainly knows best. Schreiber had six golfers qualify individually for the Nassau County Championships, where the team finished fourth overall. Schreiber varsity volleyball rallies from down two games to none, but falls to Massapequa, 25-23, in the fifth and deciding set of the Nassau Class A title game.
It was the match that the No. 3 Schreiber Vikings varsity volleyball team had been working towards all year: a final meeting with the top-seeded Massapequa Chiefs for the Nassau County Class A title. When it was over, after five grueling sets played at Adelphi University on Thursday night, the Chiefs were crowned champions. But just barely, winning in 25-23, 25-22, 16-25, 19-25 and 25-23. Boys team finishes in 12th place while girls finish in 13th.
The Schreiber High School boys and girls track & field teams recently competed in the Nassau County High School Class A Track & Field Championship at Suffolk Community College's Brentwood campus. The boys team finished in 12th place out of 15 teams with Calhoun taking down the Nassau County Class A title. The Vikings' best finish was Jacob Levine's second place in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:40.58; Elmont's Angelo Melendez finished first in a time of 2:39.76. On the girls' side, Garden City took down the title while Schreiber's team finished in 13th out of 13 teams competing at the championships.
