In 1941 Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis took the life of Yankee legend Lou Gehrig and more than 50 years later it claimed another Yankee, pitcher “Catfish” Hunter. At the Walk to Defeat ALS in Eisenhower Park on Sunday, Hunter’s teammate Rich “Goose” Gossage was on hand to sign autographs and help raise money for The ALS Association Greater New York Chapter. Attendees lined up to make a $10 donation for a baseball for Gossage to sign. "I know that all of us have been touched by ALS somewhere in our lives," Gossage said to the crowd of more than 5,000 people who came out to show support for friends and loved ones who have been affected by ALS. Organizers said that the Long Island Walk to Defeat ALS is the largest fundraiser of its kind in the…

More than 150 members of The Community Synagogue and Temple Beth Israel gathered Thursday afternoon at Community Synagogue to participate in UJA-Federation's Families Helping Families. It's a program in which volunteers prepare baskets of food, crafts, and housekeeping items, which are then delivered to families in need of a Thanksgiving meal. Members of the temple provided Thanksgiving treats such as turkeys or coupons for turkeys, cranberry sauce, yams, stuffing, desserts, and any appropriate item to help create a memorable Thanksgiving for the needy in Port Washington and other areas in Nassau County. "[We do this] because otherwise these people wouldn't have Thanksgiving," said Tammy Kornfeld, marketing manager of UJA Federation…

Alper's Hardware helped raise money for the Community Chest with annual cook-off.
There was a lot of sauce, sweat and tears, but by the end of it all, the 2nd annual Alper's BBQ Festival left Port Washington residents well-fed and smiling. Local folks gathered on Irma Avenue off Main Street to cheer on their neighbors-turned-chefs and sample food from Port's barbecue restaurants on Sunday afternoon. Funds from the event were raised to benefit the Community Chest of Port Washington, a non-profit organization designed to raise funds for local charities. "We wanted to do a charity of some sort and we were trying to do it in conjunction with the store," said event organizer Adam Novick, who is one of owners of Alper's Hardware. "We were looking to do something for the Port Washington community and still cover a lot of …

Sophomores Kaitlyn Brown and Stephanie Reali organziaed the 12-team tournament with all the proceeds going to the school's Key Club, which will then cut a check to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Here's some game action of the championship team of Dan Bernstein, Emma Horowitz, Jason Desimone, Scott Schwartz and Adam Epstein.

Schreiber students round up pennies for charity during Spirit Week's Penny Wars.
Most people think a penny is worth next to nothing. To many it's throw away change. But this week has been different for students at Schreiber High School. Now, a penny could be the difference between victory and defeat. "The more pennies we get the better," senior Jeanine Imperatore said. "If we have more, then we should get the points and we can win Spirit Week." Penny Wars are at the center of Spirit Week — five days of competitions between the four grades vying for school supremacy. Each grade is now in the midst of seeing who can make the most coin for its class. "You want to only put pennies in your grade's jug because they give you positive points," said Ali Lifton, who helped start Penny Wars in 2008 with then-seniors Nicole …

All proceeds from Tri-M concert will be donated to the American Red Cross.
Schreiber High School's Music Honor Society provides its members with a chance to exercise their musical abilities in a creative fashion, and tonight those musical talents will be going toward a good cause. The honor society, otherwise known as Tri-M, will be a hosting a concert of great musical variety with the proceeds going to the Haitian relief efforts to help repair the mass destruction resulting from the devastating earthquake that took place in January. Senior Solomon Hoffman, president of Tri-M, conjured up the idea for the event as a result of his sympathy for the victims of the tragedy. "After hearing about the tremendous amount of destruction and fatalities in Haiti, I thought it was imperative to help in some way with the …

"Hoops for Haiti" campaign raises more than $2,000 for Uniondale High School, going toward the earthquake relief effort.
It was truly David versus Goliath at Schrieber High School on Tuesday night with the first-place Uniondale Knights (10-1) in town to face the struggling Vikings (1-9). This was multiplied by the fact that the Vikings were without two of their starters, Jason Desimone and leading scorer Dan Bernstein, who were serving the second game of a two-game suspension. But for two-thirds of the basketball game, the Vikings went toe-to-toe with one of the top teams on Long Island. The Vikings, without Bernstein and Desimone due to a violation of team rules, trailed by just three points with five minutes to go in the third period, but simply ran out of gas in the fourth and fell to the Knights, 52-32. Shaquille Mosley and Bolade Akingboye led the …

Organized efforts throughout the area hit their stride this weekend.
Local groups horrified by the recent devastation in Haiti are mounting their efforts to raise funds for medicine, food and supplies to help those in need. Only a few days after the massive earthquake which caused what many are calling a "tragedy of biblical proportions," local churches, synagogues, businesses and schools have mobilized in a relief effort. During Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend, The Dolphin Book Shop will donate 10 percent of its gross sales to Partners In Health (PIH), an organization that has been working on the ground in Haiti for over 20 years. "We were first introduced to Dr. Paul Farmer's enduring work in Haiti through a deeply moving book, 'Mountains Beyond Mountains,'" Dolphin's owner Patti Vunk said. "We believe …
