LIRR Back to Normal for P.M. Rush

A lightning strike Thursday at Jamaica crippled the system; Problems now fixed for Friday Night commute.

The Long Island Rail Road expects a normal evening commute Friday following a lightning strike at Jamaica Station that crippled the system on Thursday evening. Signalling equipment was damaged by the lightning strike and, at one point, the entire system was unable to function through Jamaica. This afternoon, the railroad issued an apology and said it was launching a probe into the root causes of the problem. "We are working closely on identifying the root causes of the malfunctions with Ansaldo, the designer of the newly installed micro processing switch and signal equipment, the statement said. "In addition, the LIRR is retaining an outside consultant, Systra, to help in the review process, including the system's lightning protection, …

The conductors were not hiding. They were just counting their money (see Newsday’s “LIRR Paying by the Rules” – 9/18/2011). Just wondering how much this will cost us in LIRR work-rule penalty payments.   more ›

New Parking Restrictions in Eastern Crest

An ordinance was adopted at a recent North Hempstead meeting to restrict parking for three-hour increments.

New parking restrictions are now in effect for Annette Drive, Jeanette Drive, Linda Road, Irma Avenue, Evelyn Road and Eastern Crest Road in Port Washington. Some residents are not happy with the three-hour alternate side of the street parking restrictions announced at the July 12 Town Board meeting. North Hempstead Councilman Fred Pollack, however, said that the parking problem on these blocks has been ongoing. Something had to be done, or the same challenges would continue. For the south side of Annette Drive there is no parking from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. during weekdays, not including weekends or holidays. On the north and northwest side of Annette Drive there is no parking from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. The same restrictions hold true …

I have to echo what Ben said. I am glad I don't live there and have to move a car everyday. I know it is a problem with the commuters but in the end the residence are going to suffer. What will happen is these people will just park elsewhere in another area of town. I say we have no parking at all this way we all suffer together.   more ›

More LIRR Delays for PM Rush

EVENING UPDATE: More troubles Tuesday as repairs continue in East River tunnel; expect delays, packed trains.

Another afternoon of delays and packed trains await commuters on the Long Island Rail Road Tuesday. The LIRR will again operate a significantly reduced evening rush schedule of trains from Penn Station. Another 20 of the 87 trains normally operated out of Penn Station during the evening rush will be canceled and combined with other trains, the MTA said. Delays and crowded trains are likely on the two branches running through Hicksville, the Ronkonkoma branch (toward Bethpage and Melville) and the Port Jefferson branch (through Syosset and Huntington.) To check specific trains, check the MTA website. While eastbound trains from Penn Station are likely to be packed, the MTA says westbound service into Penn Station will terminate at Jamaica …

'Clever' Communication for Commuters

Port Washington native creates innovative mobile messaging service for LIRR commuters that shares real-time alerts and updates between travelers.

As a native of Port Washington, Joshua Crandall always understood the "commuting culture" on Long Island. He said he realized how technology keeps people connected, but that commuters are often not connected to one other. After being laid off from Morgan Stanley in 2006, Crandall came up with an innovative business model based on that premise. He wanted to find a way for commuters to alert and update fellow travelers about delays, weather-related issues and all other slowdowns related to mass transit through their mobile messaging devices. "I started it as a frustrated New Jersey Transit commuter," Crandall said, "and grew it into a 10,000 person network that is part of the fabric of the daily commute for thousands of area commuters, …
