The Dolphin Bookshop Cafe is open for business.
Since relocating from Port Washington Boulevard down to Lower Main Street, the Dolphin Bookshop has finally opened its cafe. Now, customers, whether buying books or not, can enjoy a beverage and snack right on the premises. Owner Patricia Vunk has been around the bookshop since her parents' purchased it in 1971 and long envisioned a cafe being an integral part of the store and the community. The Dolphin Bookshop Cafe officially opened for business the beginning of April. Stay tuned for an announcement about its upcoming grand opening.

The bookstore’s high-visibility new location wins latest Golden Storefront.
For more than 64 years, the Dolphin Bookshop has been a beloved purveyor of books, toys and other treasures. Now the shop has a prize of its own: the latest Golden Storefront Award, bestowed by community groups Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington and the Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District. "Dolphin's unique and eclectic bookshop is a destination in Port's waterfront 'Arts and Antique District,'" said Mindy Germain, executive director of RFMBPW. "We are happy that Port residents have recognized the Dolphin for adding beauty and charm to this vibrant retail intersection." In June, the store moved to its current location in the historic Alfred C. Bayles building at the corner of Main Street and Shore Road after …

Wolfbead Designs' Nora Johnson creates one-of-a-kind pieces, with recycled metals and ethically sourced gemstones.
Nora Johnson fell into jewelry making accidentally. A trip to Dvora's Art Studio to watch her daughters paint ceramics found the former lawyer and registered nurse fingering heaps of multicolored beads. Before long she was stringing jewelry for herself and as gifts, next she was fielding requests for custom work and in 2006, Wolfbead Designs was born. "I can spend hours arranging where the stones are on a piece and rearranging," said Johnson. "I found there was a way that just looked right to me and it was very satisfying to find that," she added. Johnson's foray into jewelry making may have been serendipitous, but her vision for her work is carefully honed: statement pieces that marry a handcrafted, organic aesthetic with eco-friendly …

After 21 years, Dolphin Bookshop will be moving to a new location on Main Street.
On Sunday, children and adults of all ages came together to help move one of Port Washington's greatest treasures, The Dolphin Bookshop. After 21 years of being a staple on Port Washington Boulevard, a team of movers and volunteers came to relocate the bookstore to 299 Main Street, in a day of marathon packing. "This whole experience has been just miraculous," said Patti Vunk, owner of the bookshop. "So many people came and the volunteers were totally engaged in helping. We are getting so close to the end, but it seems like it just keeps growing. I feel as if we are between worlds." Nearly the entire store was moved on Sunday, but an abundance of sale items were left behind and sold on Tuesday at a clearance sale in the store's old …

Discount cards encourage residents to shop and save at local retailers.
Cost-conscious consumers are keeping a tighter hold on their pocketbooks these days. When they loosen the purse strings, community group Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington (RFMBPW) hopes the dollars are spent on Main Street rather than online or at big-box stores. The grassroots group dreamed up an incentive program encouraging its members to patronize local retailers; all 2010 RFMBPW members receive a discount card entitling them to markdowns at participating retailers. The member discount program went into effect in January of this year; currently 34 local retailers participate. More retailers are being added each week. Port Washington Estates resident Tracy Lynch doesn't have a member discount card yet but she sees the …

Fans of the children’s book “Fancy Nancy” celebrated their love of all things fancy.
Tutus, feather boas and tiaras adorned the crowd of "Fancy Nancy" fans happily streaming into the Parent Resource Center on Valentine's Day. The "think pink" set was resplendent in finery modeled after children's book-heroine Nancy who lives (and dresses!) with a "more is more" motto. The "Fancy Nancy Valentine's Soiree" was organized by Paula Gottleib Herman, chef and owner of LilChefs.com Special Events, which specializes in children's cooking parties. With welcoming cries of "bonjour, bonjour," Chef Herman ushered in the 31 girls and their moms, along with a stray dad or two, for what was billed as a "posh" tea party. "I have a fascination with Fancy Nancy," Herman said. "She has such a big vocabulary. It's such a powerful image for …
