Port Washington hosted Herricks in a softball double-header, with varsity and 12-and-under teams.
The Port Washington softball team was in fine form over the weekend as it took on Herricks at the Guggenheim Elementary School playing fields, but competition hardly figured into the equation. Instead, the focus was all about community, as the teams played to raise money for the American Cancer Society Still, at the top of the sixth and final inning, Herricks was already leading Port Washington 6-0, and a runner on third with just one out was poised to make it 7. Herricks had built its lead with aggressive base running, and it was not letting up in the final frame. When its batter connected with a high fly ball to right, it appeared easily deep enough to score the run. But Port right fielder Genevieve Bellon proved otherwise. Catching …

In a 14-0 win, Lynbrook dominates in this non-league game.
A casual softball competition of two non-rivals, the Port Washington Vikings and Lynbrook Owls, on Thursday swiftly turned into a blow-out victory for the Owls, 14-0. The game was stopped after five innings under the mercy rule at Lynbrook's Atlantic Avenue field. Heroes: Lynbrook starting pitcher Rebecca Tisdell allowed only one hit in her shutout to Port Washington third baseman Janice Havasy, who led off the second inning. The Vikings held Lynbrook to one hit in the bottom of the first inning. Turning Point: In the bottom of the second, the flood gates opened. Lynbrook's first baseman Kasey Keller led off with a walk. She advanced on two passed balls and scored on an error, the first of five runs — four unearned and one squeezed — that …

In a 12-9 victory, Port Washington gets big non-conference win.
The Port Washington softball team defeated Great Neck North on Saturday, 12-9, in a non-conference game at Great Neck. The Vikings now stand at 3-6 overall. From the very beginning of the game, Port Washington took control. Janice Havasty hit an impressive three-run home run in the first inning. Soon after that, Port Washington loaded the bases and scored more runs. In almost the blink of an eye, Great Neck North was down 8-0. Going into the second inning, the game appeared to be a possible blow out. However, Great Neck North scored six runs, making the game a now more interesting 8-6. Port Washington scored two more runs in the third inning, one by Sara Marinelli and the other by Havasty. Jackie Avila also hit a double, and Kirsten …

Mercy rule invoked as Comets top Lady Vikings, 12-0, in varsity softball action.
Mercifully, it only lasted five innings. Unmercifully for the Lady Vikings, there was a reason for that. The Hicksville offense struck early and often, scoring in each of the first three innings, en route to a 12-0 pasting of Schreiber in Conference III-IV crossover play. The large deficit caused the mercy rule to be invoked, and the game was called after five. It was the third straight loss this week for the Lady Vikings, who fell to 4-4. After a wild, back-and-forth 12-7 defeat to Great Neck South on Thursday, the outcome on Friday was decided in a hurry. An error and four straight hits gave the Comets a 4-0 lead after one. Vikings starter Danielle Leibowitz took the loss, going the first four, like she did a day before. "I think …

Eighth-grader Alex Caprariello throws no-hitter in her first varsity softball start.
Eighth-grader Alex Caprariello had never started a varsity game before. When she stepped out onto the mound on Tuesday, her varsity career consisted of just two relief appearances. Following her performance on the road against Hempstead, expectations couldn't be higher for the first-year varsity pitcher. Caprariello threw five innings on no-hit ball in the team's 22-0 win. She faced 19 batters, striking out 12 and walking just two. The young gun also helped herself at the plate going 2-for-2 with four runs scored and an RBI. "It felt really good and its really a self confidence booster," Caprariello said. "I try to improve every game and even though I did pretty well today, tomorrow I will have even more effort." Coach Eric Sutz was proud …

Senior Danielle Leibowitz returns to the mound after missing last season to pick up her first win in over a year; eighth-grader Alex Caprariello strikes out eight in relief.
The Lady Vikings used a strong return to the mound from senior ace Danielle Leibowitz, an encouraging performance from newcomer Alex Caprariello, and an eight-run second inning to defeat the Malverne Mules, 14-5, in a non-league matchup Wednesday. Senior Christina Mouradian scored a team-high five runs and drove in three while senior Emma Horowitz went 3-for-6 with a triple and three RBIs. Freshman Sara Marinelli added three hits and two stolen bases for the Lady Vikings in their season opener. "I was proud of a lot of the things we did, we played better than in the scrimmages," coach Eric Sutz said. "I saw our younger players do some things well that we've been working on, so I'm proud of that." Leibowitz, in her first game back after …

Experience and healthy pitching could lead to conference contention this spring.
The temperatures are rising, the fields are thawing, and the bats and gloves have been unpacked. Spring season at Schreiber High School has arrived, and the softball team is preparing for the 2010 campaign. Coach Eric Sutz brings back an experienced group featuring eight returning players, and a ninth whose return could thrust the Lady Vikings to new heights. Pitcher Danielle Liebowitz returns for her senior season after missing all of 2009 with a broken, non-throwing elbow. Sutz said her return to the mound already puts the team miles ahead of where they were a year ago. "[Her injury] left us with nobody with any pitching experience at all," Sutz said. "We went into the season with nobody who'd ever pitched in a varsity or JV game. That …
